I'm thinking about two new revolvers to buy with tax refund next month. One will be a 617 four inch for a kit gun. Second will be a .357 six inch barrel. Target gun only. I have a little range set up on my farm.

Leaning toward 686. Is that a good choice?

If you want to buy new you're only choice is a 586 (blue) or 686 (stainless) as far as I know. Either is a good choice. If you want stainless you can choose if you want a 6 or 7 shot version.

I had a 6" 686 years ago, which I foolish sold. I never found a more accurate handgun.

For shooting .357 you can't do much better than a 686. The 6" version makes a dandy range gun.

686+

I acquired a 686+ over a year ago and have had Zero regrets. I added a Vortex Razor which is kinda like cheating, but is a lot of fun. I'm in negotiations and hope to pick up a 617 6" tomorrow. The Vortex Venom (3 MOA) is a great red dot also. I recently mounted one on my M1A SOCOM 16.

if you get a big refund, you could also consider the 627-5 V-comp which has an 8 round cylinder. I take mine to the range frequently and love it.
5" barrel with or without compensator, adjustable rear sight, can use with or w/out moon clips.

Thanks guys. Looks like a 686 for me. Very few nice used S&W revolvers around here ( Delaware ), thats why I'm looking at new. Less hassle.

Follow up from my post yesterday:
The deal went through and I was able to get this S&W 617, 6", 10 shot for $500.

This is the only one I've found in the Jacksonville, Fl area used market.

While I love my 686 6", you might consider the Model 27 in a 6 1/2". The N frame would really reduce the recoil.

I got the 617 4" and the 686 7 shot with wood grips. Will post pics as soon as I'm able. I'll shoot them next week after cleaning and weather warms.

Great choices OP.

I went with the 6" 617 myself, but I am sure that you will like the 4"

And you cannot go wrong with a 686+. I have that one in 4" and a 686 (six-shooter) in 6". Both are tack drivers.

The OP didn't say if he was reloading his target loads or shooting factory stuff for target fodder in either 38spl or 357 mag . A 4" 586/686 are fine but the 6" , nope --not in this lifetime .
A 6" 19/66 are great target guns . I have a 19 in a 6" and it's a favorite . I also have a 28 , 6" and again real nice gun but for just target practice , it's a bit heavy with just target loads in either 357 or 38spl .

Agree! I also like the Model 28 and R8 (8 shots of 357 magnum) which can be found. The 686 comes in a Talo model with a 7" (?) barrel

I have and vote for a 686 7 shot 3 inch barrel love mine and is not bad to carry around and they are shooters. Widow
