Record heat wave

I'm outside Portland so not as hot as in the city but currently at 107° in the burbs. This morning, 9:30, the power went off...

Apparently, per the power company, some 17 homes in my neighborhood affected. The house held the air conditioning cool pretty well, though, so wasn't too uncomfortable. They got the power running again after 2:00 PM, thank goodness!

Think I'll revisit the whole house generator thread from last winter....

Well, it looks like we get to cook for awhile. Looked at the 10 day forecast. The lowest high temp forecast is 90 on Wed. However tomorrows forecast high is 107. Then Sun. is 114. Mon is 107. To put it in perspective, in the over a century of recordkeeping, the highest recorded temp in Portland was 107 in 1942. Looks like the record is gonna fall. 90+ thru July 4th. The only AC we have is a portable unit in my father's room. So, lots of fans, lots of fluids and a lot less clothing. I may try putting a cast iron pan in the sun and cooking an egg. Or I might just burst into flame and do my Richard Pryor impression.
We cracked 100 for the first time this year today. They are saying we could see temps as high as 113 in the next week or so. I just spent 2 hours on the riding mower and another hour PLUS running the weed eater.
I'm spent. Even after a cool shower and cranking up the AC.

Two weeks ago I picked up a couple of used window AC units for our lake cabin. A 12,000 BTU for the living/dining/kitchen area ($90) and a 5,000 BTU unit for our bedroom ($60). I installed them last weekend, and I'm glad I did. Perfect timing - we're going to the lake next weekend and with the current forecast it would be miserable without AC.

Last year we replaced our entire HVAC system. At the time I was less than thrilled about droping about $7.5k, but I ain't complaining now! 108 outside, 74 inside. I'm a heat wimp.

Right now in Fairplay Co. at 11,000 ft. 45*

Wow, I was raised on a cattle ranch in South Park, half way between Fairplay and Hartsel. Went to Fairplay HS. Lived there 59 till 64, when I joined the Navy.

Would like that now, 108 at 3:30pm. 😳

I am just about 14 miles east of Salem so headed out at 6 this morning to do chores, water the garden and beds and pick some more blueberries from the small patch. Once that was done and they were processed it was out to process another couple hundred bundles of dried lavender for the buds. I'm good for about an hour or two doing that in the shaded lean to then it is inside for a short break then into the shop with the fan going to glue up some more oak pieces for a project. It is nice to head back inside every couple of hours into the cool 74* but I have a hard time staying in when there is stuff that needs done outside. Just have to pace myself in this heat.

Granted this is outside my garage next to the driveway but it is directly facing the sun, no reflection off pavement etc. Never seen it this hot before, no matter how you slice it. We tend to be a few degrees hotter or cooler here at the edge of the valley versus out in the middle of the valley.

We usually get a couple days a year over 100, we are looking at a full week in the extended forcast. Fortunately our humidity is low, around 18%, they call it a dry heat. Its still hot, I used to work outside in it with coveralls on, if your used to working in it you just keep hydrated and try to stay in the shade when you take a break. The upside for me is right now I'm working on a cast iron park bench restoration and am having a great luck rubbing in Tung Oil every morning in the cool of the day. On the fourth coat today, looks like it will take six maybe seven to get the sheen I'm after. I love that stuff but it can be fussy, this heat is perfect for drying coats in my shop. It was 100 out there yesterday, 75 in the house and probably around 70 at my keyboard in the basement...this is where I like it.

All of you with cardiac issues be careful in this heat. It was in the mid-90s here this afternoon. I decided to try to do some work on a window well and the giant Norway spruce tree I have in my back yard. I figured I could handle it because where I was going to work was in the shade. I installed the old cover on the window well and then started lopping limbs off the spruce tree and stuffing the cut limbs in a contractor's bag. After that I was feeling some tightening in the center of my chest so I got back into the house to get out of the heat. Luckily I was just having some gas congestion and it dissipated, a condition that I was familiar with from before. But when I feel it coming I make sure to get out of any stressing environment to make sure that I'm not having a cardiac event. Everyone be careful and be safe in this heat.

Well, Portland proper made it to 115° today. Here in the burbs we hit 112°.

Too damn hot. Thank goodness the power held for our household today. Went out briefly to check the mail. There was breeze and it felt like a hair dryer was blowing all over my body.

The worst is supposed to be over now. Down to 76° by 11 PM, 65° by 6 AM, and a high of 91° tomorrow.

Thank friggin' god. Had to take my dad into the hospital last night which meant closing and locking the house, not opening it and running fans to cool it. Hotter than blazes in here.

Sounds like the place to be.
It hit 107 today.

Sun goes down and suddenly it's 84. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
That is one nice thing about the wet-side.
Sun isn't down yet here - but even though it is getting close it is still 105 in the shade on my front porch. It might drop to 90 an hour after sunset, but it won't get below 70 overnight.

At least it's a dry heat here in Vegas - 8% humidity.

I've got a big hill to the west. Goes down a little earlier right here.
I feel for ya. Hang in there, relief is coming.
