Has anyone here mounted a RMR or SRO on a S&W revolver? Maybe a 617-686-629?? Was wondering if it can be done and what mount you reccomend? Thank you.

Google on "allchin" mounts.

I put a red dot on a 66 using a (Raptor) mount sold by a fellow who used to make and sell them in the classifieds here 7-8 years ago. Awesome machining...

FS: Reflex Sight Mounts for Smith & Wesson Revolvers and Pistols

Seems like he disappeared about 2020.

His mounts were made to work on any S&W K/L/N frames with the extra tapped hole in the topstrap beneath the adjustable sights. Any other would require DIY drilling and tapping.

I put one on a J frame 317, the first such equipped J I've ever seen.

It required drilling and tapping a hole and a little file work to make the rear settle down over the frame. The whole package weighs< 14 oz and the little gun will empty all 8 shots into 1.5" at 50 feet. I don't believe a finer kit gun exists.

I currently have a weigatinny mount and Burris FF4 on my 617-1. Works fine for me. I like it better than scopes.

610-1 with Leupold 2x
629-4 MG w/Holosun
29-5 w/ Leupold 2x

I have used a Burris FF3 and Weigatinny on both a 617 and 686. As far as shooting goes that combo worked very good. Holster carry not so much

I put a Vortex Venom mounted with a Raptor plate on a 629-4 Classic. It was fun to shoot, and I think it was the second time I had it out that an older gentleman at the range was intrigued with it, so I let him shoot it. After a couple cylinders, he had a huge grin on his face and said he’d have to get one. Just offhand, he asked what I’d take for it and I threw a number out there that was probably $300 higher than what I had in it. He pulled a wad of cash out and I sold it then and there. I haven’t put a red dot on another revolver yet, but I will. The 629 is behind my 610 in the picture.

Nice shooting, 41Fan!

I have a Weigland/Leu Delta Point Pro on a 6 inch 629-4 that shoots really well, 5 under an inch and a half off sandbags at 25 yards if I don’t mess up. On a good day, if the lighting, and conditions are perfect, I can occasionally shoot as well with irons.

Red Dots DO NOT work well for me in bright conditions, no matter how the dot is adjusted. In dim light, they rock.

If I’m strictly shooting groups, my preferred sighting system is the old Tried and True Leupold 2 power pistol scope.

Just some humor for you forum members.

I tried a Bushnell TRS red dot on one of my 500 Mags. Bushnell said it can handle 12ga 3" Magnums.

I shot 4 medium heavy rounds and totally destroyed the scope. Objective lens was 45 degrees from normal, like a bloated fish. Don

Does anyone know what happened to Raptor? They made a good product, but seems like right around covid time, they went missing.

I ran a Beuhler no drill base for one inch rings on a DW 15-2 back in 1990 and mounted a Ultra dot 2moa on it for hunting and the first ultra dot lasted 18 years when I had to buy a new UD . It worked very today on a 22lr ruger 22/45
till I swapped barrels from 8" to 4" and reinstalled the stock rear sight . Astigmatism has been an issue for me for 30 years but the ultra dot would let me turn down the intensity to a lower setting thats worked well , better than at least single lens dot optics of today . I do fine Green dot or circle dot works well for me , Far better than red today .

Good luck find your mount and dot optic .

As most of you probably know, Taurus is manufacturing their TORO line of revolvers that are all optics ready, and apparently they are quite popular. I wouldn't be surprised to see S&W come out with their own line of optics ready revolvers in the very near future.

Their business was disrupted by one of the CA fires back in 2020. They have never come back from it AFAIK.
