Looking to buy my first red dot for my AR. I don't want to break the bank (under $200) but I don't feel like I know enough about it to have a solid opinion. What do I need to consider when choosing a red dot?

From pricing and a few youtube reviews, I'm leaning towards the Vortex SPARC AR.

Check Palmetto state armory. They are running a couple sweet deals on both the Sparc and the Strikefire II that includes a bunch of PMAGS. Either is a bargain and solid choices for red dots that don't break the bank. Bought a Strikefire II a year ago. Have been very pleased with it.

@okiegtrider....That's why I'm leaning that way :). The sight at a competitive price ($199) with 10 mags essentially for free.

The only "budget" red dot that I'd recommend is the Primary Arms Advanced Microdot.

If you're willing to actually get a good one, the Trijicon MRO is the best in my opinion. The bitterness of low quality lasts long after the sweetness of low price wears off.

MRO or AimPoint PRO or CO

I'll second Rastoff's recommendation. Have one and have been very pleased....

lets just say "been there..done that"...had 3 Vortex optics..2 RDS and 1 magnified ....I really like Vortex products and the warranty makes it seem like a no brainer...BUT....I wasn't satisfied till I got an Aimpoint PRO

Vortex and Primary Arms are both very popular choices in the sub $200 price range. Palmetto's deal on Vortex with 10 pmags can't be beat although Primary Arms had cockeyed drilled Micros at substantially discounted prices a couple weeks ago. Bushnell TRS-25 is a popular choice in the sub $100 category. There's a ton of different labeled budget red dots that all look suspiciously the same in outward appearance but I don't think there's a lot to be gained from experimenting beyond the aforementioned three budget labels.

Things to consider are dot size, tube size, battery life, activation and brightness controls, mounting options... and of course reasons to use a red dot versus a magnified optic like a 1-4x which are all discussed in many threads here.

Happy red dot hunting.

The best value for an RDS less than $200 is the Primary Arms Advanced Micro Dot With Rotary Knob and 50k-Hour Battery Life. Optics are not as clear as an Aimpoint, but you can't beat it for the money.

With your budget I'd go with the Vortex deal. I have 3 red dots, 2 scopes, and find all to be excellent. But I don't cruise malls therefore I don't know how they'd hold up under such conditions. I believe you'll like a Vortex just fine. And they have excellent customer support. Hard to beat.

Both the Strikefire II and Sparc AR have good features. I'd go with the Sparc AR for its 2 moa dot as compared to the Strikefire 4 moa dot. I have the AR and appreciate the easy access and common AAA battery and the on/off/brightness button facing the shooter.

I'm a Trijicon guy myself and use a RMR on one of my rifles. For a cheaper dot, I have a PA Microdot also and it's very good for the money........but it's not Trijcon.

Reading 101. Very simple.
