What brand of scope is best suited to my 617?? It has been drilled for scope mount.
Any words of wisdom to be shed on this subject would be appreciated. :D

I generally prefer scopes to red dots, but since you asked about red dot advice, I've had good luck with an Ultradot. I'd avoid the cheapo red dot scopes.

Just recently I put a Burris Fastfire 111 with an Allchin mount on my 617. Haven't shot it yet...but it sure is sweet.

The Bushnell TRS-25 has been fantastic and doesn't break the bank...

I liked it so much, bought a second...

That little red dot really helped me tighten up the groups. Note that the red dot has no magnification, where a scope would.

Have fun!

If you shoot any competition such as Steel Challenge; this C more Railway red dot 8 moa is what many use. MidwayUSA.com usually has them on sale for about $208.

Trijicon red dot. DOES break the bank. But Oh. My. Lord. It's a thing of beauty. I went from shooting 3-4" groups at 10-12" yards to the same groups at 18-20 yards. And I can't even SEE 18-20 yrds. S'like shooting magic bullets!

617 + red dot

Ditto on the Burris Fastfire III with an Allchin mount.

The Burris Fastfire comes with a picatinny mount, did you have to get a different mount for your 617 Pappabear?

After a lot of research, I first bought a Burris Fastfire III online, but had to return it. There was glue all over the lens and I have no idea how it passed QC. I'm sure it was a fluke, but turned me off.

Drove to the LGS and immediately fell for the low cost TRS-25.

If money was not a concern, I would go for a Vortex. The guy linked below does pretty well with it. I watched him do some shooting in person and it's pretty impressive. :D

Can't buy a red dot here in Canada easily. So will be shopping in the U.S.
Need to know what mounts I'll need for the Burris Fastfire 111. Love that vortex but the price is a killer, maybe in spring.
Thanks for all info folks! Keep it coming!!
Did you need a weaver mount for the Bushnell??

I have the same Bushnell on my 617 as MarkAlt and am very happy with it.

Now where is the best place to buy the rail to mount the red dot on??
Weaver?

Due to the lack of recoil, you could get by with a less expensive optic on a .22 LR revolver. Magnum guns will eat cheap scopes and red dots. If you want magnification I'd stop at 2x. I won't go into all the reasons, but IMO higher magnification is more trouble than it's worth for most revolvers. Leopold makes a very nice 2x traditional handgun scope.

If I were to buy a new red dot today I think it would be one of the newer reflex type. There's all kinds of inexpensive Chinese optics on the market in the sub $100 price range. MarkAlt's Bushnell is probably Chinese. A number of guys swear by the imitation "Docter" brand reflex sights for low recoil handguns and non-waterproof applications. This is not a real Docter, as those are made in Germany and cost 400+ dollars.

Now where is the best place to buy the rail to mount the red dot on??
Weaver?
It's possible to pay a whole lot more, but a seven dollar Weaver works pretty good and they're sold everywhere. It just really depends on how much you want to spend and how far you want to take it. There are some great base designs on the market just for D&T'd S&W revolvers. Some are so low, and blend in so well, you can barley see them when the scope is on. But they also sell in the 50+ range.

Another vote for the Burris Fastfire III with Allchin mount. I have been very happy with mine, and it will mount the dot the closest to the bore of any mounts out there..
This is my 617-6 with Allchin mount and Burris Fastfire III.

Buy the Allchin mount and you be happy happy. Take the sight off and it goes in easy, plus it compact.

I have noticed the Allchin doesn't retain zero as well as the JP Enterprises combo. But it's only a concern with those microreddots that require removal to change/clean the battery. Had that minor drama with a Fastfire II on a 625. Had a perfect 75 zero but lost the windage a bit when the light went out. (Cleaned the battery and it was fine.)

But the JPoint reddot is just too dadgummed bright in all light levels unless you are shooting white targets in direct sun...Errrf! 'Cuz i likes it very well otherwise. (The JPoint and also the Allchin, too.)
