Reg Mag's - Cheaper by the Dozen? ... I Don't Think So...

I am going to go ahead and probably show my ignorance but I was showing my wife this great thread and fine collection of RMs. She asked and I had no idea so here goes: Is there any Registered Magnums that are still in the possession of the person it was originally registered to? Any on this board? When was the last RM made? Just trying to figure out how old the owner would have to be.

Ballpark dates, if the last RM was made in 1938 for example 75 years have passed. If a young man of 21 bought it he would be 96 years old if he survived The north African Campaign, Normandy, any of the pacific islands and perhaps Korea.

At 96 if he is still fully cognizant, he may own it but if he has not exercised he may not be able to hold and or shoot it.

If any are hiding in a sock drawer it may be the widow who has it.

The RM is a grail gun for many, it was not made in quantity.

My questions to a RM specialist are, how many are accounted for so we might determine how many are in the proverbial sock drawer.

In closing, the photos of the above RM's are very nicely done and lastly, dang, what a nice collection.

You do not come across as an "Old Man" but anyone who possesses that many RM's has to be OLD, not an easily acquired selection and quite an impressive collection. Compliments are in order!

Unfortunately for me I did not make it to the SWCA annual meeting in KC this past month. I would have loved to go, but work and family commitments made that an impossibility. I have very much enjoyed the photos of the great displays and have viewed many of them several times. If the annual meeting is ever close enough for me to drive to again (I made it to Tucson a couple of years ago) I have been able to cobble together a few guns that I would love to display.

Over the past several years, I have taken an appreciation for the pre- and early post-war guns and their boxes. So this morning I decided to have a little "show" at my house. I pulled out a few pre-war 357's and their boxes and set them up for an informal photo shoot and since you cannot be at my show, I thought that I'd share some quick and dirty photos with you of several of my RMs and Non RMs:

"Google Earth" Group Shot ;)

I also took some un-staged, totally natural BRIGHT AZ sunlight closer-up shots of the individual guns if anyone is interested.

Thanks for letting me share,

Richard:

Okay, now you are just bragging. Wow! That is absolutely outstanding. I hope they are all sighted in for Buffalo Bore "real" .357 Magnum ammo, you know, 158 grains at 1,510 fps. There is a collection anyone would be proud to shoot! Do I see J. Edgar's Reg Mag #1 hiding underneath? LOL

Thank you for sharing. Absolutely outstanding!

Shawn

Those are real pics, right? Not Photoshop? Holy Moly.

Every time I start to feel a little bit like a collector because I have a few Kit Guns and a couple of interesting Masterpieces, I stumble across another of Richard's threads and get my reality meter recalibrated. I suspect I don't have enough minutes left in my entire life to put together arrays like the ones he regularly presents.

Two thumbs up. I wish I had more arms so I could offer even more. Nice!

Rick:

That is a 1st year RM (December 1935) that shipped to a Police Inspector in Omaha, Nebraska in the exact configuration that you see. All parts of the gun number. It has been owned by several prominent collectors, including Gary Garbrecht and at some point was also fitted with an 8.375" post-war 357 barrel that is also numbered to the gun.

The box, on the other hand is only the 2nd small box that I have ever seen in person. The box is most likely not "correct" for a 1st year vintage gun, and in fact, the number on the bottom of the box indicates that it shipped with a post-war 3.5" 357 in the S76XXX SN range. But it is so cool to have a short box with a short gun that I have now paired the two together.

Unfortunately, RM 649 it is one of my favorites and currently not for sale at any price (by the pound, or otherwise).;) But on the bright side (both literally and figuratively) I can share a couple of closer-up photos from today's shoot:

That one has my heart skipping a beat.
Thanks for sharing the story of that gun. I don't blame you for not wanting to sell it. Hell, I wouldn't sell any of them!!

Not too many guesses on the barrel lengths yet I see, so I'll take a stab at a few. The bottom gun in Column 2 looks to be a 5", so based on that WAG, I'll guess Column 3 at (top to bottom) 5.5, 6, 6.5, and 8?

My dream gun is a Reg Mag with a 4.5" barrel.....

What a show!!!! Bet you didn't get those at your LGS. We definately need a display at the annual meeting. Thanks for sharing!

I wonder what your LGS owner would say if you asked for a 12 pack of RM's?

Amazing collection!

A10:

Great eye and oh so close (missed 100% by 0.375") - 4 out of 5 correct - the bottom of column 3 is 8.375"

Thanks for playing - can you get the rest of column 1 and 2?

The beautiful 3 1/2" is the easy one.....so, 8.375, mebbe 2 6 1/2 to round out Column 1, then Column 2 starting with two 7s and then another 8.375????. I'm expecting to have completely blown my streak here.....

Pretty close: Column 1 (top to bottom): 3.5", 8.75", 6.0", 6.5"

Column 2: 7.0", 6.5", 8.375, and then the 5.0"

And just for reference, the bottom three on Column 3 are Non RM's, with the nickel 6.5" being relatively uncommon for a Non RM.

I did not get any of the 357's at the LGS, BUT, I did get my nicest Large RM Box at my LGS. He kept it in the back and wanted a ton of money for it. I ended up trading him three guns that I had lost interest in for the box... He was happy and so was I.:)
