Regular wear or maintenance issue - 28-2

Fellow members....I recently acquired a 28-2. The gun is in time and locks up tight but when looking at the contacts of the ratchet they appear to be dinged. So just to ease my concerns I sent it to S&W and they sent me a quote for $118 for revolver repair/tune up. I had the work done and the gun seems the same and appears the same. They did include some new wood grips on the gun. Is this wear to be concerned about? I have several other Smith revolvers and the same part doesn't look the same. If you zoom in you can see the dings or wear marks.

You didn't include a note using the factory name for the part! Call CS back up and tell them what happened and "Nicely" demand they do it right this time! Don't send the grips but include in the note they already replaced them. The way things go now days the bench person won't take the time to read the letter and install another set of "Stocks".

I would think that those raised areas on the ratchet should have been addressed. I would be disappointed. Im sure it has nothing to do with function.

I mentioned in my note that the ratchet located on the ejector star had dings present and that I wanted it addressed.

If the gun times correctly and locks up tight (test lockup with the trigger pulled and hammer down, should be minimal to no movement of the cylinder), then I wouldn't worry about what the ratchets look like. On these older guns, there is a lot of hand fitting and the ratchets are filed so the hand properly engages them into proper lockup position. It will sometimes look like more has been taken off one or more of the ratchets than the rest, making them look worn. That ratchet looks about like mine does.

The Model 28 cylinder has a lot of steel in it and thus the hand is pushing a lot of weight to rotate it. There's bound to be some wear, but if your revolver is timing correctly and locking up solidly, I'd not give it a second thought.

My current Model 27-2 has the same wear marks as yours, yet it locks up as solid as any S&W that I own and it is perfectly timed. It is probably the most accurate stock S&W that I own... even with those unsightly wear marks.

Just to add another confirmation: my newly acquired 627-1 has these wear marks too (even a little worse than yours) but it seems to function fine.

Looks just like my 28-2. Id say normal.

One of my 3 28-2's has similar mars on the, whatever it's called. Functions 100%, and is the best looking of all three.
