I have a Remington Police model 870 12 gauge shotgun and it has a 2 shell magazine extender on it. The knurled nut and the spacer bracket that fits under the barrel has turned a copper color - actually I first thought it was rust but it is definitely not. OK - so it's not rust, but why the coppery color? Did they copper plate underneath the parkerizing? For what reason? I am just very curious.

Mine did the same. Then I repurposed it and a friend that was a gunsmith parkerized the whole gun to match.

It's not unique to parkerized 870's.
I got this blued Wingmaster in 1976 and have picked up a few spare barrels over the years. The barrel guide ring on two of them have developed a copper hue.

My 1981 era 20 gauge wingmaster has that exact same hue on the bbl ring. Perfectly fine.

On mine, it's just the magazine tube extension nut. I am not concerned as I know it's not rust, but I am curious as to WHY. I guess they use copper somewhere in the manufacturing process. Sure loks like it to me.

My extension tube nut on my 870 Express from about 2004 did the same thing. Hasn't gotten any worse. I just don't pay attention to it.

The parts that take on a coppery color are made of a different alloy so they take the bluing differently. I own several 870s and a couple of mag tube extensions. They all exhibit the different color on those parts.
