Reminiscing - my first big catch!

Have caught some dandies fly fishing on the Yellowstone. A city boy who didn't know a dang thing about the outdoors until discovering it for myself, raised my kids camping and fishing around the west at every opportunity. These days I spend a fair amount of time fly fishing for salmon where rivers meet the salt, either from my skiff or shore. The brawl usually lasts a minute a pound.

Concerning the guy who was upset with you, I've discovered that sometimes fishermen just don't have a sense of humor!

About thirty years ago I was camping at Ponderosa State Park near McCall, Idaho. It's on the edge of Lake Payette, and I was there to fish. There were two little floating docks, and one had about a half dozen guys fishing with bait and bobbers. The other one was empty. I walked out to the end of the empty one, and the first lure I threw out was a Luhr Jensen Needlefish. On my very first cast, I caught a 17" lake trout. I held it up and showed the guys on the other dock, and said, "First cast! How 'bout that?"

Reaction? Nothing. Not even a smile.
