Removing stuck silencer

Hey,

Everytime I shoot my 15-22 with a silencer the end cap gets stuck on the end of the barrel. I twist and turn as hard as I can with my hands and it wont come off.

I have used pliers a couple of time to get it off but the teeth have left some scars/ scratches on the silencer

Does anyone know if they make vice grips with rubber coating or anything else? I have wrapped a rag around the end and used that as well, but it gets old going and looking for a rag, etc.

Might want to try using a pipe strap wrench. They are at most hardware stores or auto parts stores. Good luck.

Have you tried using a strap wrench on it?

They sell inexpensive ones with a plastic handle & rubber strap at Sears and other tool outlets for a reasonable price.

Sears also sell plastic covers for their locking pliers if you have any with a large enough jaw. They work ok.

Once you get it off with a strap wrench use choke tube lube on the threads to keep it from sticking.

Is the threaded part of your barrel too long causing it to bottom out in your silencer? If so you may need to add a washer/spacer.
Also try using some never seize on your threads, but don't use much, that stuff goes a longggg way.

damn i would have never put a pliers to it,,, i would have got a coffee pot and heated the water to the point steam is coming out the spout and heated it with the steam till lose,,, no scratches not harm to the metal or finish and yes this will work

Cannon plug pliers used in the avaition business have large rubber inserts in the jaws.

Yes a thin coat of anti-seize grease on the threads will work wonders; I use it on just about everything.

Hmmm... I usually have to keep an eye on mine from turning loose.

I'm curious... once you use pliers to break the end cap loose from the shoulder of the barrel, does it then spin freely the length of the barrel threads, or is it hard turning for a few turns? Does this happen with just the 15-22, and perhaps not with your pistols with shorter length threads? Why I'm asking is that your 15-22 barrel threads might be longer than the threads on the can, and that the threads at the end of the barrel are filling up with crud and making it difficult to remove the can/end cap.

Not to be insulting, but I would have never taken a metal tool straight to the silencer.
A scratch was sure to happen.
Wrap the silencer in duck tape, electrical tape, old rag, coolant hose, tennis racket handle wrap, etc. spray some PB Blaster, then give it a go.

try heating the suppressor to expand the metal, this should open the threads up enough for you to unscrew it-then go to the auto parts and buy some anti-sieze compound before reinstalling

Try using two pairs of vise grips one on the barrel side too.

Mine does it on certain guns, not on others. Anti-sieze definitely helps.
I bought the can to use, so I'm not bothered, touch it up with sight black or paint.

OMG that is frightening..If it were mine it we be on a trip back to the manufacturer to insure it was not damaged..and I have dozen or so $200 stamps under my belt..

This is your problem. Get a spacer, such as these:
