Thought I would share that I now have (6) guns in the shop to have the ILS removed and The Plug installed, (4) N-frame and (2) J-frame. They are all keepers, so I am making the investment.

I didn't feel qualified as an armorer to do it myself and was glad to pay to have it done. YMMV

As a consequence, I am of the opinion that these ILS things should not singularly be a deal breaker on new production guns, if one can simply remove them and hide the external blemish.

Ok, I'll start.... I have a 638-3 and I left mine alone. I walk this fine line when I'm on these forums with all these great mods. Should I do a trigger job, change sights etc. So far I have left everything I own, bone stock and so far, so good.:D

Of course, I'm strictly a SD guy. No competitions, just plenty of classes and range time.

Can someone link a dealer that still makes the plug for a 686?
Thanks

.....what is considered a fair price for installation? ....only one gun with this issue so far....

I guess there could be interest in what guns I am having "plugged". I don't have any S&W revolvers that I don't plan to keep, i.e. regret buying or no longer enjoy or somehow a duplicate.

I've got a 586, two 686s, two 625JMs and a bunch of other S&W revolvers. Outside of the original 1917 45ACP and the three Victory 38 Models I have, the others all have this ****. As far as I'm concerned, these revolvers with the S&W safety capitulation **** are abortions. Personally, I'm jonesing for a real 586 (or similar) without it all (key? what the heck is a key? It's supposed to shoot! Not keep you from shooting!).

But let's not rant but rather discuss removing locks we don't value.

For a while I was mad about the empty slot next to the hammer until I thought about all the Combat Magnums that had the trigger stop removed. Never heard of anything gunking up in that empty slot so I would hope the same for the empty slot next to the hammer.

do locks adversely impact resale value?

It depends on the gun.

If it is a gun that you can get with a lock or without one, like an older 686 compared to a new 686, the Non-Lock guns move faster and probably get a few more bucks.

But a lot of new product has them like 627s and other Performance Center guns and they are expensive, and don't sit on shelves for very long.

I don't like the look, but I have a 686 with a key lock, and it is a sweet set up.

Watch - 20 years from now Guns with external locks will be the rage and people will want them for the cool-factor.

Mark my Words :p

I have one Smith revolver with the lock and I removed it myself. I'm not a smith and don't claim any specific knowledge or expertise but I took out the dog gone thing myself. I don't need it and I don't think anyone else does either. They are an abomination and are unnecessary. However, they are there and that is that. Mine wasin a 627. I wanted it very badly and so traded a very desirable Les Baer 1911 for it. Was not happy it had the lock so I took it out. It is a fabulous revolver. 5" bbl, 357, 8 rounds! Etc.! Anyway. I don't bitch about the lock. I just took it out and forgot about it. I have no intention of selling the gun so it is a non-issue. Didn't plug the hole either. Just livin with it! Gun shoots greatly! If I was to go carry a revolver again, this would be the one! Not happy about the lock. I try to buy my Smith revolvers without it......

My research found it to say a hammer lock, but as handejector states, you can't pull the trigger, so either or is good with me.:)

It would perhaps be better to think of it as an action lock, because the whole system stops moving, right? Never tried it.

But why quibble, when so many refer to it as a trigger lock?

Don't like the locks but they don't keep me from buying the guns I want.

Fine, but the thread is not about whether one likes or dislikes the lock, especially in concept alone...a grudge against S&W. The topic is the removal of the ILS, period.

As soon as I know, I will post my experience with the cost of installation of Plug kits, which we know cost $25 each for the parts. However, I probably will get some consideration for having (6) guns done at once.

That's funny as you state "it should not be a deal breaker" then what is your thread about? Removal of the lock? Yes very simple to do. How much the removal cost? Gee probably varies from smith to smith.
