Several years ago the hammer nose on my 19-4 broke. A local gunsmith agreed to fix it. He charged $50 parts and labor. When I picked the revolver up, he explained that he had ordered a used hammer with hammer nose installed. He gave me the original hammer and all was well. I didn't like the new hammer as it had a tiny slight bit of creep in the SA pull. I figured one day I'd swap things out.

A few days ago the back of the hammer nose popped off. Turns out the hammer nose had a slot on the back. It cracked right along that spot. I have obtained several hammer noses and rivets and have installed a new hammer nose in the original hammer. Happily the rivet was still in place so the process was easy.

Now, my quandary. How do I install this hammer? From what I've read, the process is not beyond a reasonably skilled person. I figure I can reload ammo, etc., so I'll give this a try. It would allow me to save some money. What do you think? Is this a repair that a reasonably skilled person can do or is it something that is better left to a gunsmith? Sincerely. bruce.

The original hammer / trigger setup could have likely been adjusted to alleviate the creep you didn’t like. Now you have a replacement hammer that likely used the sear from the original to alleviate fitting of a sear used in another gun. Try the repaired hammer and see how the SA and DA work, try their original hammer to test the same and you may get lucky. Once you figure which sear came with your gun, be sure that one is in the hammer of your choice. Worse case is a new sear needs to be fitted.
