I received a call from LGS that he had in a high condition Model 48. I believe he said it was a 4 inch barrel. I have never been interested in them before so really know little about them except that it is a .22 Magnum.

I am wondering if they are common, or hard to find? How do they shoot? Is ammunition readily available?

Thanks for your information.

I have that exact revolver. Ammo is plentiful around here. Fun gun to shoot too. I paid $300 for mine a few years back. Prices are steadily climbing for this pistol.

4" are not that common. I have a dash 4 with an extra .22 long rifle cylinder and presentation stocks. I can't tell you how it shoots because it's my safe queen and I wont shoot it.The 2016 Supica book list them LNIB for $1,250.00 and that's without the extra cylinder. For comparison, I also have an 18-4
with a 4" barrel and it is more accurate than I am! So I am sure the 48 is a real shooter depending on condition.

Make sure you wear your ears! They are nice but loud, but still a lot of fun. I had a 6" but would prefer a 4". Be sure and post pictures when you get back for the LGS

Just be aware that S&W came out with a "Classic" series Model 48 (it's the 48-7 version) that is recent manufacture. It's a fine revolver -- I owned one for a while -- and lots of fun to shoot, but it's not an older gun like the 48-4, and it does have a lock. The 48-7 guns sell new in the $700 to $800 range, but the older versions command more of a premium.

I've been looking for the right one for quite some time. Finally closed the deal on this 48-4 that's been in the safe since the day it was purchased Jan 1986. Can't wait to get my hands on it!

To me it is a kind of specialty gun; a model 18 in .22 LR is less expensive to shoot, and as noted above the rifle loads are really loud in the shorter barrels. However, it will also use .22 WRF if you can find it. Good luck in your decision.
