Retire Feb 1st any advice?.... I did it.....

Srsmith, how long did it take to get the idea in your head that working is over?? This is all to fresh, Larry
For me it took about a month, getting myself set up with new health & dental insurance kept me thinking about work things while I was comparing different plans. I retired January 4th but I have been off work longer because when my company moved on December 14th I took the remainder of my vacation and didn't go back until my last day. Now.... where did I leave that Dillon 650? :D
Steve

Larry,
Find you a "custom hot rod/body shop" type place.
Make friends with the owner.
Sit in the corner, drink coffee all day and tell the guys working "you're doing it wrong".
Years ago I worked part time for an older fellow and that's exactly what he and his friends did. It would really tick us off. Looking back..... It was pretty funny.
Bob

Well, I was sitting there looking through the classified today and went back to the thread Gorings S&W had for sale. He had some nice guns for sale and on Wed when it started, I thought the Pre war Outdoorsman was a heavy duty he misidentified. Kept going back to look at it and today it hit me. (Old I guess) It had target sights, DUH!!!! It's now my RETIREMENT GIFT to myself. Jim comes to the NE Ohio bunch, talked to him on the phone today and bought it. This was my first big retirement decision, Larry

Larry,
Congrates! I saw that you had sent him a message. Good deal. Bring that to the spring meet and I'll bring a few that I've picked up here lately.
Bob

Bob, you guys are spending thousands to have new guns to show at the spring NE Ohio bunch. Good for the bad economy. Trying to set up the first morning retired shoot. It should be on every Monday morning when everyone else is going to work saying how fast the weekend went. Will post when I know what day this week it will be. Larry

Congrats and sail confidently in the direction of your dreams.
Retirement is essentially the triumph of time over money.
Time is the commodity that you can't make more of. Retirement's prime directive is to make the most of your time left.
Do it now...
Do what makes you happy.
It's later than you think...

Looks like Thursday morning we'll meet for the first time in the morning. I'll be there abt 9am, shooting is only from 10 to 10 so we'll have to wait till 10 am to shoot. Steve will be there, he comes to the bunch. If anyone wants to join, there is a first time fee of 200.00 and the normal dues of 97.00. With tax, it's abt 313.00 the first year. Next year you pay the 97.00. Next Tuesday the 9th is the monthly meeting at 7 pm. If you want to join, this is a nite to be there. I will find people to sign for you, Larry

Ollie and Denny, give me a like if you read this.

I'll be 65 on the 15th of Jan. I hope to work for cash if I do work but we'll see. Set up a 10 meter pellet gun range on the basement and found a Daisy 777 to use down there. We walk 1-2 miles a nite if the weather is good so I'll use the treadmill when the weather is not good. Never figured I would get to this point buy its here. Can't wait, Larry

Check with the Social Security office to see if that bonus check (paid vacation, paid sick leave, etc) would have any effect on your benefits, especially if you do any paid work this year. Sometimes, all it takes is a statement from your employer to clear it up.

Going over the $15K plus limit can stop your SS check for a month or two. SSA calls it an over payment. Once you hit your full retirement age of 66, you can make as much as you want and it won't affect your SS check.

I could retire in May 2016 but I want to stay till May 2017 my son started working with me and I to work another year what do ya think ?

Muley, I'll watch what I make. None of the LGS's are hiring. 99 savage, go for it, I was very tired on working on cars and couldn't wait to retire. If I could have gone out at 62, I wouldn't have waited till now.

Well, I'm 2 weeks into it. When I wake up I know I don't have to go to work, it's weird. Been going to work for such a long time, it will take a little time to get this out of my mind. I am happy that all the BS of body work is behind me. One of the first goals of not working was set up last nite at the NOSC club meeting. Every Tuesday morning from 10 am till 12-1 pm will be a morning shoot that retirees could attend but is open to other members. It I'll be on the calendar in the next few days.
The gift I bought for myself for all the years of work should be at the LGS today. FedEx tracking has it in the area yesterday at 3 am. It's a pre-war 38/44 outdoorsman. I'll shoot it next Tuesday morn at the club. When I get it home I'll play dress up with it and see if if the 2 N frame Keith Brown grips will look ok on a pre-war frame.

I can definitely set used to this. I can see why people on social programs don't want to work, it would get in the way of them doing nothing. I hate shoveling snow but at least I have all day to do it, getting lake effect off of lake Erie. Larry

So far retirement exceeds what I expected. Haven't gotten a lot done so far, couple projects out of the way. Organizing the reloading bench with new cupboards to clean up the mess next. We'll buy the cupboards in the next few days and put them up next week. Worked on some guns that would have taken too much time to do previously, now it doesn't matter. Go to the LGS a few times. Met some friends for breakfast a few times and will meet a few others. The Tuesday morning old guy shoot is starting slowly but I'll make it work. Sometimes I like doing nothing.

Start the morning on the IPad, this is the time that used to be filled with going to work and walking in the shop to realize all the BS that had to be done for the day. The IPad is my best friend now. Mornings are quiet and peaceful time. Can't wait for the weather to break. Every March and August 1st I announce the next NE Ohio bunch's next meeting and that's started in the lounge.

The big cool thing is that I'll be in TULSA for the first time hanging with some of the S&W boys. I'll be at the SW bunch on Saturday nite at the hotel. Hope to meet some of the forum members while there. Right now it looks like l'll be at the show 3 days. I'm excited. So far, life is good. Larry
