Retiring December 31st, 2016

Retiring after 41 years with the local power company. It's been a great career that has been fortunate for me in that I got to work with a great group of people and many great friends.
I've been mentally preparing myself for several months but I'm sure it's still going to be strange to get up and not have to go into work.
I have a lot of projects lined so I'm sure I can stay busy. Might even look into getting a part time job at a LGS .

Worst thing about retirement is that you never get a day off. You will soon wonder how you got stuff done when you had a job. Congratulations . . .

Congratulations!!! I retired once, but it just didn't take. That was 19 1/2 years ago. Come spring, I'll have 20 years in the "retirement" job. I'm not sure if retirement is for everyone... and not sure that there is a certain age that we should think of as "retirement age". I'm 71 now, and at work today, I felt like I did twenty or more years ago.

I guess that everyone knows when it is right for them.

I like that I have a little extra money that I can spend on guns, ammo, tools, and all the stuff that goes with our hobby. But it's more than that, I just like what I do. And I think that I'm good at it.

People still ask me, "What do you do all the time, now that you aren't working?" And I always reply, "Whatever I want to do and nothing I don't want to do."

Or they'll ask me, "Don't you get bored not having a job to go to every day?" My stock answer is, "No. I was bored with my job, which is why I retired!"

When I retired, it took me a couple of weeks, I think, to get over the feeling that I was on vacation or something, and was going to have to go back to work in a few days. But once I got acclimated to a whole different lifestyle, the workplace and all its mental stress just vanished from my thoughts.

One thing I did not miss was the stress, I felt so much better after I retired. My wife tells me she is my boss now, I said I didn't need a boss I could screw things well enough without any help.

I think you will wake up a few weeks after you retire and think you are so lucky. You made it! Congratulations. But, those first weeks can be a little confusing. You'll see.

Welcome to retirement. I did almost 29 years ago & never looked back. Did the handyman thing for the next 12 years & made a fair living. Out lived most of the *******s I once worked for. And also 3 wives. Now at 85 my reloader gets a work out. Keeps the kids in ammo.

Stay busy and don't rush into a part-time job. Especially in retail, if you haven't had to work shift work for a while and haven't had to work weekends you won't like it. Take it from a former Big Box Store part-time employee.

I must be lazy or just plain sorry because I don't understand having to get used to retirement or needing to find something to do. I retired 03-31-02 after 40 1/2 years and have never not even for a minute missed not having to work. I eat when I'm hungry and sleep when I'm sleepy. Life is great.

Yes, it's a great idea to keep busy, even take a long-desired, long distance vacation. I think the first psychological adjustment we must make it when we learn that the job can continue without us and that we are indeed expendable.

For those of us who want keep raking in the money until we die, be sure to leave instructions whether or not you want the armored car in front of or behind the hearse.

Congrats,I worked for Florida Power & Light for 36yrs.retired 6yrs.ago ....I have all my fingers & toes & no headaches!! Haven't been back to the yd.in 6yrs.One thing to watch out for is ""when" they call you & ask if you would like to come back as a contractor!! I told them nope....you're taking my pool time gotta go!! Cussed at me while I smiled & ended the call.Never called me back!Sniff boo-hoo! Your going to love it!

I cashed in Sep. 01 of this year and am enjoying it immensely so far.
As to me working a job after retirement, maybe someday. Right now I've got enough unfinished projects to keep me busy for the foreseeable future.

Even though I took a retirement job, I still do stuff I wouldn't have done before. Example, I have taken 14 trips to Europe since I first retired, and had plenty of time to take them around my second career.

Retired Feb 1st from doing body work. Don't miss it at all, SOLD all my tools. Taking 1 year off, not doing much except enjoying not working on cars. Thought abt the working the LGS but considered it a job, ended up watching the grand son 2 days a week. Retired on Monday and Tuesday morning I started an open shoot every Tuesday morning for us retirees at the gun club. Sometimes someone brings food and we have fun shooting, talking or eating. Starts at 10 am and get home whenever!!

Enjoy what's coming, nice Xmas present to yourself. You'll fall into a routine that you will be comfortable with, enjoy it. Congratulations, Larry


Edit. The train in the valley runs a Polar Express from November 14 to December 20 and need 8 Santas a nite. There are 2 trains a nite, an Akron and Independence and Peninsula is the North Pole. I volunteered fo 12 nites this year and this Saturday we do Mr & Mrs Clause. We will be the sleigh Santa, not sure which train we will be on yet. It's a blast.

Working is over-rated. I kept a full time job for 46 years with a few years off for college and the military in that time. Some people work for the money and some people work for something to do. I must be one of those people that worked for the money because now that I have enough of it I'm not looking for something to do. I've always had enough interests to more than fill up my time. My wife however thinks I enjoy remodeling projects in the house. I finally had to tell her the other day, after doing two bathrooms, that it wasn't real high on my list of things I like to do. She didn't understand. I explained to her that if I had liked to do plumbing I would have been a plumber.

You might want to rethink that working for a LGS, you just might spend more than you ever make! I know I have more time to visit the LGS's and my accumulation of firearms ans multiplied 10 fold since I retired in 04. Maybe too much time on this forum and Gunbroker.

Keep busy, but set aside a day for the range each week.
