Roll pin press tool?

I don't like to hammer on roll pins so I wondered if there were a gunsmith related 'press' tool to push out roll pins.

This want came after removing the rear pin of my Shield, wow that sucker was tight! I'd rather push it out than hammer it out next time.
Any suggestions?

Brownells has a complete roll pin set or Grace roll pin set. I have both and a complete set of Brownells including the starters, and drivers for the pins. Also, the roll pin holders for re-inserting the pins so you do not need to hold it. All three sets work great and are well made.

I suspect that one of my sight pushers could be modified to do this job. However, if you have a drill press and some means of holding the frame, you could probably do pins with it using the drill press as a sort of arbor press. You still need the proper type of punches, regardless of whether you pound or push them.

The drill press may work out, I do have one and yes your sight pusher may also double up as a pin pusher too.

I watched some video on pistol manufacturing, all pins were put in with a press and a holder that held the slide or frame at a specific angle. It was fast and looked pretty easy, I would guess they have a press and a holder to do the opposite. I was doing a trigger job on my new Gen 4 Glock 19, I was knocking out the pins with a Glock pin punch, It was very hard, I had to switch to a metal punch and a bigger BFH.

I would second the Roll Pin Punch Set. They are made precisely for Roll Pins and should not mangle them. I have used my set many times and the Roll Pins are fine.

The key to proper pin punching is it has to be done on a firm surface. If you do it on wood or a soft surface, the wood will absorb the impact and the pin will not move properly resulting in having to hit it too many times. That in itself will cause problems.

I use either a Starrett Bench Block, or a home made non marring Bench Block depending on what I am doing. Also make sure your gun is secure and flat - you might have to support the other parts of the gun with Hockey pucks or something similar so it sits level.

Karl, I doubt that an unmodified sight pusher would work, but a purpose built tool based on the Mk lll design principle is entirely possible. The jackscrew would have to use the proper size, proper type punch tip. Round me up 25-50 orders and I'll build one!

I would think it not only impractical to use a Press or Sight Pusher for Roll Pins, but you are more likely to damage the firearm than by properly using Roll Pin Punches.

Think roll pins are bad? Try double roll pins (telescoped).
