I am looking for a round butt 4" 66-5 or -4. Did they ever make a quare butt 66-4 or 66-5? I will likely purchase online and you can't always tell when the grips on on the gun.

Thanks for you help.

I could be wrong, but I believe the round butts were reserved for short barrel guns to make them more concealable (under jackets and off-duty attire). So 2 1/2 and 3 inch barrels were the round butt guns. Of course, there are always exceptions, but they would be rare.

Oh, OK thanks. But I have to say that is dissapointing to me. I was under the impression that all of the newer guns(maybe within the last 10 years) are round butt guns.

4" round butt 66-4s were made. Not sure how many, but they aren't too common. This one is the best shooting of all the S&Ws i have had. Shown here with the original Uncle Mike's conversion grips

According to SCSW, the square butt was discontinued in "1995-96." This was in the middle of the -4 models. So all -5 models should be round butts, regardless of barrel length. -5 models should be easy to spot: They will have the frame mounted firing pin (instead of the hammer), but no internal lock system.

66-5 also has a pinned front sight. :) This is great news to me. Thanks.
