Hi,

I'm looking forward to purchase a 624 4" in some weeks (hopefully, if I get the permit, not easy here in Germany). The gun is intended as a backup while hunting. I own a 27-3 4", so I know what to expect regarding weight and balance. But everytime I handle my wife's 696 with the Ahrends Retro Bananas on it, I admit, that the round butt grip feels just a little more comfortable than the square butt on the 27-3 (even though I have large hands). Would it be wise to have the 624 roundbutted? I could imagine that the weight and the balance of the 4" barrel would benefit from a square butt grip, especially when shooting warmer loads...

Any hints are appreciated

regards
Ulrich

Rather than offering any hints, I'll offer some pictures of two round butt N-frames I've had built.

First is this rescued from neglect M27-2:

And second is this 45 ACP blued "Mountain Gun" I had built from a M25-2:

In both of these cases I've found them comfortable to shoot and carry. I even tried Hogue RB rubber stocks on the 357 Magnum and they were comfortable but not as pretty as the wood, finger groove factory stocks in the pictures.

Good luck if you go this route.

If you are purchasing a new 624 I would expect that you'll find that it comes with a round butt grip frame and a round to square conversion grip mounted on it. Because I believe S&W has moved nearly every revolver to the round butt grip frame with the only holdouts being those in the Classic series.

I had two model 65s a 4" square butt and a 3" round butt. The RB was more comfortable to shoot so I put the RB grips on the SB frame and scribed a line on the frame. Then with hand tools rounded the SB. It took an hour or so and made it an easier revolver for me to shoot.

629 RB

I had an older 629 that I had Magnaport do a RB conversion to as well as some other things. I like it alot better as far as ergonomics and comfort goes.

I own a Model 29, with a 5" barrel, and round butt. It's an excellent shooter, and the round butt is very comfortable. The revolver tends to roll just a bit, instead of coming straight back into my wrist joint. The recoil feels something akin to the way a single action like a Ruger Super Blackhawk, does.

I didn't notice any difference in felt recoil, but it was more comfortable for me to shoot.
