Anyone here know anything about routers?
I currently have SuddenLink cable/internet and rent my router from them. I would like to buy a new one from WM but need something basic and inexpensive. Any suggestions?

I had to replace a router recently and have had good luck with an ASUS RT N10+. This is a wireless router that sets up easily and has good coverage. If you don't want a wireless router, most any one will do. Wire only routers don't need much set up and they pretty much do what is needed on their own. A wireless router needs a bit of set up, but it's still pretty easy.

As a FYI, my experience and that of just about everyone I know is that wireless routers are good for about 3 years and then need to be replaced. I don't know what goes bad in them, but they all seem to do it.

Looking at the WM site, they do sell the ASUS router and it's pretty inexpensive.

Fool around with computers (work and play) and often help friends and family with purchases. The answer I always give with just about any purchase of this sort is decide how much you want to pay and get the best you can afford. Now this isn't always the best route to take because you can end up with serious overkill.

With wifi routers there are many good options all kinda depending on application; large house, 2 stories, lots of metal, etc. I tend to stay with what has worked best for me in the past, price, setup, longevity, strength of signal, and I pretty much end up with a Linksys model.

Linksys are pretty reliable, reasonably price, and very easy to setup and get connected. The software that comes with their routers are really good step by step and their tech support is pretty good too.

Hope this helps.

Need to define your requirements a bit better. Also, shop newegg.com

About the comment that they only last about 3 years, NEVER have I had such an experience, except Netgear and 3 months is long for them :)

I use one of these and have for years.

ASUS RT-N16 Wireless Router 802.11b/g/n up to 300Mbps DD-WRT Open Source support with USB Storage, Printer And Media Server - Newegg.com

I've also had many Fry's store brand that have worked just fine, Buffalo, ... Make google your friend and research based on what you need. There are forums like this out there for home networking. I use dd-wrt (I believe the ASUS now come with that as the base) and there is an appropriate forum for it.

PS - biggest reason I've observed for failure are power surges, dirty power, poor ventilation (heat stress on components)... Many times the power supply goes out (cheap capacitors, ...)

2nd for Linksys

Ours is over ten years old. It only goes off when the power goes out...

I tried Linksys and couldn't get it to work and was a little pricey. I now use a Motorola modem cost was $70 from best buy. The modem rent was $10 per month. Me buying the modem paid for itself in 7 months vs renting. I use a Netgear wireless router from best buy don't remember the price maybe $60-$80. It was very easy to set up and has a lifetime warranty.

I suggest to stay away from Belkin.

Cisco Valet Plus (m20), easy set up, software is on a flash drive, plug it in and follow directions! Been flawless since installed in 9/2012. never turned off unless there is a power failure to the house.
