Why is the Smith and Wesson 945 such a great pistol. I have heard so many positive things for some people . Just would like to know all the Pro,s and cons. I know the word Smith & Wesson means a lot to me but also Les Baer means quality also. I ma in the market for eith 9MM or 45and am thinking of Les Baer or S&W 945 or Springfield Arms Trophy Match

I have a 945 and love the gun. While it may not be as accurate as the top end competition my will shoot around 2" or a little more at 25 yards all day long from the bench with good handloads. That is as good as I can shoot and I am happy with that. I have managed to shoot a few 5 shot groups slightly under 2" from the bench but more often they are a little over 2"s. I like the way the gun sits in my hand. The grip is a little less forward than the 1911 and some folks don't like it much but it fits me well and I have gotten to like the grip very much. It is a great gun and I enjoy shooting it very much.

I shot the S&W 945 in bullseye pisitol matches for several years. It comes from the factory with a superb trigger and is amazingly accurate. It fed all my handloads with total reliability including 185 gr. LSWC at ca 720 fps. The only minus is that it is not a 1911 frame and therefore you cannot use, holsters, grips, magazines, etc. made for the 1911.

I also own a SA Trophy Match. In contrast to the S&W945 it came with a horrible mushy 5 to 6 lb trigger. I finnaly replaced the sear, hammer, disconnector etc. with a set from Ferking Gun Works to provide a nice crisp 3+ lb pull. My gun has also proved to be as reliable as the S&W945 and virtually identical in terms of accuracy. The checkering on the front strap is somewhat coarse in terms of lines per inch but it does provide a firm grip. The magwell is well done.

A friend has a Les Baer and has had more malfunctions than I would tolerate. They are very tight guns.

The reason that the 945 is so great is because of the match grade barrel, spherical titanium barrel bushing and slide tightly fitted to frame. There is absolutely no movement in the slide to frame fit.

It is a Performance Center gun. PC guns are, IMHO, work of art.

Unmatched fit and finish.

Mine is tight for sure and can be a lot of fun sometimes getting the barrel and bushing the way they should be after cleaning. Once again though it is a great gun and I am really happy with it. If I want a 1911 I will probably opt for one of the new Smith Pro series models.

If you choose to shoot in competition requiring a holster, you will find there is a poor selection available. Magazines, while not impossible to find are not as out there everywhere as 1911's are. The bluing on some pistol parts turns maroonish with time. I do not personally care for the giant fading 945 billboard on mine (but I'm sure some like them). If hot-rodding is your plan, get a 1911. You should also add a 5' or 6" perf center 5906 to your list for consideration (used).
