I spied a used S&W 10 at a local gun shop. It has a 5" pencil barrel. I read a post elsewhere that these 5" versions are uncommon. Is this true?

It's about 70, maybe 80 % bluing. Lock up is pretty good. Diamond grips.
$225. Sounds like a decent price.

Oops! Sorry, this should have been posted in the earlier 1961-1980 year S&W thread. Mods please move it for me.

I have a weakness for collecting shooter-grade S&Ws in that price range. I'd jump on it, especially with the 5" barrel.

I'm not an expert on the model 10, but I can tell you that the 5 inch barrel is uncommon, although certainly not rare. I'd say that price with the diamond grips is a good deal if the mechanics are good.

Cincinnati police in the 60s issued them, Went to heavy barrel 4" prior to 68 or abut that time, New recruits were issued the heavy barrel in the academy,,,dates are foggy.

Uncommon? Definately when you compare them to the number of 4" heavy and pencil barrels out there. I came across one a few months back for around the $200 mark in good shape, so I picked it up. I don't consider it a collector's item, but I do like K-frames.

I'd pick it up.

I agree with the other responses- the 5" barrel is less common, but IMHO no Model 10 configuration is truly uncommon except the 3" HB.
