S&W 15-3

Very nice! About a year and a half ago, I was finally able to get a Model 15 via a retired cop friend of mine. It's a former local P.D. 15-3 that saw light service, according to the minimal holster wear on it. My appreciation for the Model 15 started in the mid 1980s, when it was the handgun I trained with for my LE firearms course.

I bought a LNIB 15-2 in 2020. Still haven't fired it. I take pleasure in owning it but I have other K frames to shoot. I might change my mind at some point but for now it's a safe queen.

The 15-3 is my favorite revolver right after my 29-2's. One of the best looking revolvers S&W ever made in my opinion! :)

There is a nice one for sale at my LGS but I have so many other K frames including a nice refurbished 67 no dash I'm content. Still…. It's tempting…

I saw a nice one in the pawn shop today but they wanted $1,200 for it which I thought was a little high

Wow, I got the nickel 15-3 and the 15-2 in this photo last year for just under $1400, for both. That seems way too high.

I purchased my 15-3 around 1982 for my then wife. She decided she didn't like it, so I've kept it - even thru a prolonged divorce.
I have a 67 no dash as a companion revolver. They are both as accurate as you can hold. You just have to love any K frame S&W!

When LE agencies buy firearms, they do so in batches. Typically they buy more than they need, in a bare bones sense. The extra are for loaners during repair, for new hires, etc. The ones that remain in the armory unissued can come up as surplus as the agency changes to a newer era of firearms. Could be this is what your 15 is.

Some LE divisions of LE seldom carry firearms. For example, the internal affairs/professional standards division. This is especially true if they are inside a jail/prison. Those handguns get shot only during quals and go right back into storage until the next qual.

A really nice 15; enjoy it.

Since you know when you bought it, if you poike around or post a serial number or partial, people can estimate when it was made or shipped. The one I bought (from another member here) had the purchase date on the paperwork. Ship was probably a year before.
