I recently saw a S&W 1905 4th Change Nickel with 4 inch barrel. The serial number on the butt of the grip had a Star stamped on it at the end of the serial number. Is there any special significance to the star? Thank you for your help!

You may also find a repair date stamp on the left grip frame when you remove the stocks. For example, something like "8/46" (meaning August 1946) with a star or diamond and perhaps a letter B (reblued) or N (re-nickeled). May give you a hint as to what type of work was performed whenever the revolver went back to S&W.

The star indicates factory work as noted above, and stamped so the gun could not be sold as new after it was refinished/repaired.
