Quick question.

What's the model number for the older S&W .22 Magnum revolver? Not the newer 351.

They seem to be hard to find, and expensive when you do find one.

Thanks in advance.

The 650 had a 3" HB and fixed sights, the 651 had adjustable sights, 2" or 4" barrels. Here is my S&W 650.

Would that be the K frame Model 48? Or the J frame Models 51, 650, 651?.

My S&W 48, do not remember if it had a dash number or not. Cost me $107.00 in May 2008. A former LE evidence gun, the finish on the side plate was eat up and I could not tolerate it. I sold it to a neighbor for what I had in it, and he sent it back to the factory for a nickel refinish. It is real pretty now, and a good shooter.

ONE, OR MAYBE MORE, OF THESE S&W MODELS CAME WITH A .22 LR CYLINDER. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHICH ONE(S) ? ? ?

This information comes from an American Rifleman article from last year:

"It has been reported that a few Model 48 revolvers came from the factory with both .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinders, but this option was aborted soon after its introduction."

I wonder if any collectors on the forum have one of these?

Here's my 648 .22-Mag. The long barrel makes it an accurate varmint killer.

The 650 has what engraver Brooks Burt in Wisconsin calls his near-maximum work. It also has the .22LR cylinder and wood grips. I rarely use the .22LR cylinder, preferring to shoot the Magnums just to be different from my K-frame .22LR's.

For plinking, the 650. For varmint control, the 648.
You can't go wrong with either.

Guy at my range has a beautiful 48. I've thought about getting one, but there's other Smiths I'd rather have for the money.

I too like the K frame 48. I have the 4" barrel on mine. I hunted for about five years before I found it at a gunshow last April. I paid eight hundred for it. Used, not abused, pretty. I really do like shooting it as it does well. I use both .22mag, and .22WRF in it. The WRF shoots every bit as well as the .22mag does. It's about three bucks a box cheaper than the mag stuff.

I know nothing about the J frame models but I think I'd get one if I could find one at a reasonable price(?).

THANKS FOR THE REPLY, WATCHDOG. IIRC, THAT'S WHERE I READ ABOUT THEM…...

I have a K-22 revolver ad from the 70's that has this printed at the bottom;

".22 L.R. auxiliary cylinder for Models 53 and 48
Factory-installed and tested...........................$33.00"

So it would seem that they do exist.
