Folks, I just saw a 442 with the Mag-Na-Ported barrel at a local pawn shop while I was checking for some older Smith's. This was the first one I had seen other than on the S&W website. The barrel adds to the "cool" factor. It has the matte blue finish on the frame and the cylinder is a matte stainless. The price was about $539 or so if I remember correctly. What are your thoughts on this particular gun and on this price? Here's a link: Product: Model 442 Mag-Na-Ported-Barrel

They also had a two-tone 442 with the barrel and cylinder a matte stainless and the remainder of the frame a matte blue. The price was just a little higher than the one I mentioned above. Opinions?

I was thinking about trading a 586 no dash, 4-inch barrel, but would really rather have a 340PD or a M&P 340. I need a back-up gun for my 1911 and would like something light to carry in my pocket. Would I be better off just selling the 586 and then looking for what i really want?

And little else.

If you're going to carry for serious, I'd pass on the novelty and get what you really want.

They look cool, but gas will be blowing up into your face. They dirty up the front sight, and they are louder to shoot. They will make a very small difference if any, shooting it.

I'm the guy who removes ports on 50 cal handguns...
Sorry to give it a poor rating.

I was thinking about trading a 585 no dash, 4-inch barrel, but would really rather have a 340PD or a M&P 340. I need a back-up gun for my 1911 and would like something light to carry in my pocket. Would I be better off just selling the 585 and then looking for what i really want?

Do you mean 586? or 686?

One Mag-Na-Port gun was enough for me. No way I would buy another one. On the other hand, the M&P 340 is the best "everyday-everywhere" carry gun ever made. Hold out for the one you want.

Beyond what the others have said, I have to wonder if that porting is going to rob even more pressure/velocity from that already stunted 2" barrel. ( read: less effective)

FWIW, The price on the 442's seems a bit high. You should be able to do near $100 off that for a std 442 if you shop on gunbroker. Also fwiw, I'm not all that impressed with the 3.5 oz difference in carry weight between my 360PD and 638. I'm not sure I would spend $100/ oz to buy that difference on the new market.

That said, I agree. Shop smart and buy what you want.
