Someone offered to sell me a 5926, i checked gunbroker to check prices but also noticed none were selling.
So thats why i'm here asking the community why?
I dont need one but, a 50 yr buying addiction has me "always interested".
What can you all tell me, did they have issues i am unfamiliar with? Thanks
and whats a fair price in 85% "good" condition?

I was looking at the 5926 a few years ago and decided not to buy after learning they are hard to fix if the decocker goes bad.

Thanks, something in the back of my old mind as well. Thats why I put it out here.

Make sure it was serviced under the recall that all decock models were subject to - look for the two punch marks under the decock lever. (Unfortunately, it has been stated that pistols recently serviced under that recall are no longer marked that way by S&W.)

Thanks, they still honor the recall I belive, I would actually feel better running that old girl back thru S&W

I have the .40 version, the 4026. I already have a 5906 and CHP4006 but just wanted one for the uniqueness of the frame mounted decocker. Great gun that handles the round well. I won't try to disassemble it further than the normal field stripping for cleaning; I've heard reassembly can be challenging. Magazines are the same as other double stack 3rd Gens of the caliber.

Most parts are available on the secondary market (except the wraparound grips, originals are scarce).

I'm guessing they're not popular since they're not as well-known as the Sig, while others may prefer having the safety levers mounted on the slide for an extra grip when racking the action.

I don't consider it an especially delicate arm and would recommend the whole series to any 3rd Gen enthusiast.

Lots of good info above.

In Summary:
1. Parts Availability is an issue for the unique safety system. Mags, barrels, other parts mostly interchange to 59xx pistols. 5926 are stainless frame - pretty robust unless abused - so if its had the recall and doesnt have any issues, parts availability may not be an issue.

2. Avoid disassembly of safety system - field strip ok but dont dive deep unless you are looking for a real challenge.

3. Grips impossible to find - there are some aftermarket copies but based on another thread here they appear to be problematic. No real option to replace grips.

4. Majority of those for sale seem to be Import Marked (less desirable in my mind).

Original 5926 (TFA-TFC prefixes mostly early 1990) had early D shaped trigger guard. Late = late 1990-93 (TFE, THB, TVB, TZK) had rounded trigger guard. Early slides generally had 5926 marking on left side of slide and "...Parts Must Agree..." on right of slide. It appears all had Novak sights (no adjustable or night sights unless 1 off Special Order).

If I could find a nice late one (good condition, no safety issues, good grips, no import marks) under $500 I would grab it. If buying online dont forget shipping, fees, taxes would probably bring that up to $600. Mags are not an issue - (still available used and often new SW original). Matching box and extra mags would be a plus - person to person avoiding shipping, fees, taxes would be a plus.

I have a thread on here from a month or so ago on a 5926 I saw in my local shop. It had the recall done but was a bit scuffed up. I’m a huge 3rd gen fan and was initially very excited to see it, but it had the square trigger guard that I hate and the decocker looked like an afterthought. It’s right up against the slide lock and I just didn’t like the feel of it. Also, for some reason putting the magazine in was difficult at first. There was some real resistance the first few tries and then it went in. Racking the slide with the empty mag in did not lock the slide open for the first few times I tried it. It eventually worked. This was factory mag. I walked out without it.

Thanks for all your input, you all affirm my concerns, it is a re import as you mention, he didnt find the 2 dots for the recall work. (i have a few 5946s i like just fine.)
Back story:
Young man at the local gun shop had bought it on GB, then didnt want it and his buds told him i may be interested. I thanked him for the opportunity, but passed, below was my recommendation to him.

Here's what I would do, (I'm really not interested but appreciate your email)
- call S&W mention 5926 recall and give ser #, if it's affected they will send a shipping label via e mail, send it.
- before it leaves S&W they will go thru it for liability reasons before they release it back to a customer.
- once back sell it for $399 with the recent "pedigree" from S&W.

FWIW, there are a number of 6926 reimports listed on line for between $640 and $750. They've been sitting for several months so far. I think your $399.00 suggestion is very reasonable. If any of those 6926 guns were at that price point, I'd already own one.

Thanks, yeah, that's what i based my recommendation on, he had paid 400 on GB a month ago. I think it a fair price "today". It's hard to say no after a lifetime addiction, but I need to distribute my collection at this stage of life not add to. (Sometimes the urge still wins).

I probably should think about disposing of my collection, but I've bought two 3rd Gens in the last year.

I keep telling myself that I don't have any more 3rd Gens on my list, but there is always something that might pop up.

Your suggestions are exactly what he should do if he's not interested in keeping it. Even if he is interested, he should see if they'll do the repair.
