S & W 637 with Hammer Question

Hello all:

I have an honest question and I hope to get an honest answer. I have about decided to buy the Model 637 38 Special Snub Nose--the one with the hammer. It takes me a really long time to decide to buy a new weapon. It is competitively priced side by side with the LCRx 38. I am a Taurus owner and carrier. I like the Model 85 but believe the extra $100+ or so will be well worth it in the long term although I personally think Taurus builds a good weapon for the price--but that is another bailey-wick (sp?) completely.

My two questions are these:

First what is the controversy concerning the "pre-lock" and the "post-lock?"

Please advise.

Secondly, are there any--ANY--problems with the 637 snubbie?

Please advise as to pros and cons of the little weapon. I want to use it much, put many rounds down range, use it as "range gun," use it for CC, and leave it as an heirloom. To this is a really big deal for me.

I have one

I love my 637. It shoots awesome, carries nice and looks good.

I put CT laser grips on it.

It mostly rides in an ankle holster. Sometimes pocket or IWB.

The lock thing is personal. I could care less.

This is at a real 34 feet using the CT laser grips.

I prefered the grip that came on the gun. It fit my big hands well, but the laser is worth having.

Zero problems with the gun, probably 1,000 rounds through it. I sneak out from work at lunch time and take it to the range.

Can't say it better than David R, so I won't try. Personally, unless it was the only gun available, I would not carry a Taurus. Am glad, however, you have no problem with yours. But get the 637 quickly!

I've carried a 637 daily for the past 3 years. It packs so nicely IWB you often have to remember you have it on. The 637 is one of the few lock models I own. I purchased it because it filled the bill for what I wanted. Have never liked a gun without a hammer. It has performed without a fault. I carry, and weekly practice, with it loaded with 3 .38 Special rounds and 2 .38 +P rounds. The lock doesn't bother me a bit. I feel you will be happy with The 637. Go for it.

I am unaware of any problems with the 637.

I have little personal experience with the Taurus.

Is one worth $100 more than the other?

If we we're talking about the M37, I'd say the S&W is better.

Since the discussion is limited to the more recent versions, I'm unaware of a difference worth $100.

Unless customer service responsiveness is factored in.

Of course, I don't buy a handgun planning to have a problem, so I discount guarantees and customer service

I've a 637. No problems with it. Put the smaller grips on it as it conceals better. Prefer the larger grips back on at the range. Amazingly light and it's easy to forget you're carrying. I've got the Model 36 and it feels like a brick (in the same holster) compared to the 637..

Another reason I looked at the 637 is I have a chiefs special. The 642 would not fit in my holsters. I have a couple good ones, so the hammer was needed or buy new holsters. I shoot my 637 a lot more than for Self Defense. I use it as a tool. Single action is handy at times. Never had a problem drawing the chiefs special or the 637.

The one in my pocket is just like David R's. They are my choice for a pocket gun.

If you can find one the 637PCs are really nice LGS got this one thru Bangers.

I had a Performance Center 637 - until my wife shot it. It's hers now. Great little gun. The PC version was worth the extra money for the superior trigger alone.

I have & carry the 638 shrouded hammer in a Lobo Leather OWB holster, & forget I have it on. The same holster fits the Rossi (early Taurus ) model 68.

Not a problem with either firearm.
