S&W 648 no dash, 6 inch in .22 WMR

Someone traded one of these in at my LGS this week. All that stainless for a .22 WMR? Whew! It was an impressive handgun with gorgeous target grips and stainless finish. The shop owner was over the moon about it being a no-dash and fairly uncommon production. I love a good .22 handgun but the magnum version just never did anything for me.

Are these as desirable as my shop friend claims or just another S&W?

Yes, correction made. It is a 648 no-dash. Stainless, 6" bbl. Gongolave (sp) target grips. Excellent condition. Shop asking $650. Anyone interested in it, LMK.

If the gun is in nice condition, I do think it is priced fairly. Remember, they don't make them any more and they weren't big sellers when they were (or they would still be in production) so there aren't that many around. I've always had a mild desire for one just because of the above.

Someone put a deposit on it by the time I contacted the seller (shop). I will let you know if the sale doesn't go through. I know the owner and he wasn't sure the buyer would come up with the cash. Stay tuned.

This has been a lesson learned. I usually don't look at anything made past the 1980's. I admired the 648, chuckled over the price tag for .22 WMR and handed it back to the guy. You live and learn. I'll let you all know if I can get my hands on it / deal falls through. Heck, I paid less for near mint 29-3 still in the original box! I love firearms collecting!

I would not have walked away at $650. I paid almost that much for an "improved" one five years ago.

You shouldn't have left there without it for that price, especially if it still had the combat grips... but either way, scarce gun.

IMHO, THEY ARE DESIRABLE. DESPITE THE COST, AND SCARCITY OF AMMO, I'M A FAN OF THE CARTRIDGE. IT EXTENDS THE RANGE AND KILLING POWER OF THE .22 CAL RIMFIRE, IN AREAS WHERE HUNTING WITH CENTERFIRE CALIBERS IS PROHIBITED......

UNLESS THE LGS WANTS REAL STUPID MONEY FOR IT, I'D BE SURPRISED IF IT LASTS LONG, ON DISPLAY........

For whatever reason, this one did not have the combat style grips. IDK if they were swapped out, or the gun was ordered that way. They were a nice set of Goncolves (target) with recessed cut-out. Should it have come with the combat grips and would that impact value?

I'm going over to my LGS to see if I can talk the owner out of the "hold" on this 648. For the record, should it have the Combat style grips? It does not. It has a factory set of Gonclave (sp) Targets grips... gorgeous grain/finish. Could it have been ordered that way? Impact to value? I'll let you know if it comes back up for sale. These new Smith's aren't my thing so have something good to trade me! I'm on the hunt for an early 25 or 27, and I like pre-'s too. Thanks!

Phew $650? I wouldn't have left that one out of my hands. You might laugh at the gun prices now but you'll cry later when you realize you'll never see another one.

I've said on here many times in the past that just about any price you find excessive today for a nice older Smith & Wesson revolver will seem like a good deal in a few years. They don't make them like that any more and the number of nice examples of them that are available to buy will decrease as time passes. Those facts cannot be ignored and as more people come to those realizations, the prices will continue to escalate.

Prices I had second thoughts about but paid anyway include $800 for a 5" 629 Classic DX (only made for one year) and $1,400 for a 5" 686-3 National Match (only 500 made in1989). Then there's the NIB 2-1/2" 66-4 that set me back $416...

Update - after a bit of negotiation, I bought the 648. Serial number: BFS61xx (I left out the xx number), underneath is: MOD 648.

Not sure what I will do it with it, but I will respond to each PM and am open to parting with it. My interest is "early Smiths" from the beginning to "pinned barrel" models in K and N frame. Right now, I hope to find a 25 or 27 in 6 or 8 inch. Anyway, picture is included. No doubt it is near mint and grips have a gorgeous grain and luster. More pics to be posted. I don't want to break any forum rules so I will go to the right area if necessary. Thanks for looking.

That's it - - definitely not going plinking with mine! Keeping it safe til I decide what to do with it!

Read a discussion somewhere that there might be two different wood "combat" grips like these. One type is wider wood down at bottom. Anyone know bout this? Wider is better?
