Hi,
I have a Smith&Wesson model 25-5 in 45 long colt. It has a 8 3/8 barrel. And I want a 6 inch barrel.Would it cost to much to send it back to S&W to replace the barrel. Or would it be cheaper to buy a S&W 25-5 with the 6 inch barrel? It has all the papers with it and the original matching blue box. Or trade for a 6 inch barrel. And last the problem with the oversize chamber mounths. I know about using a bullet and drop it into the front of the cylinder and see if they fall through. Is there a serial number range to tell if you have a over size cylinder?
Regards

SDM charges $200. to cut the barrel and add a interchangeable front sight like the DX has. My guess is bluing would be extra. Add for cost of shipping both ways. Not sure about the cylinder.

Last time I E mailed Scott, he was not taking in new jobs. May have changed now. That was back in Dec.........

I checked with S&W to see about having a 8 3/8" barrel installed on my 29 that has a 6" barrel and they said that they didn't have that barrel anymore in stock. So I bought a 629 with the long barrel. The problem with some of my Smith's is that they have undersized cylinder throats that is determental to good accuracy with the cast bullets that I like to shoot. I typically like my cylinder throats to be .002" over barrel groove diameter if I can get it. I don't think that jacketed bullet shooting is nearly as critical as long as the throats are not greatly undersized. I would just find a nice 6" barreled 25-5 and work a trade, they are out there. Good luck!

If the throats are undersized, why not just ream the cylinder throats to the proper size? Was a common problem on some of the 625 guns built early on.

Hi guys
Well I bought a a S&W mountain gun 4 inch barrel. In blue finish. I wish I knew about getting the cylinder throats ream before
