S&W Letter: What A Disappointment!

I sent away for a letter on my flat latch model 34 back about the 4th of July.

I received the letter today and it only contained the general history of the .22/32. It didn't give any indication of when mine was made.

I didn't have to spend $30 dollars to learn that, I already knew it from reading about the .22/32's in Mr. Jinks' book.

Boy do I feel like a bonehead!

I just found the second page of the letter. The envelope was slightly mangled and so was the letter. So, between the creases and the raised watermark the two pages were stuck together.

It does tell specifically about my 34. Serial number 444XX shipped from S&W on 1/6/60 to American Wholesale Hardware Co. in Long Beach, CA.

First of all, it's doubtful that you'd have success in tracing the gun after 48 years, even if the store still existed. It doesn't. There is no listing for it in the Yellow Pages online from two sources.

Remember, prior to 1968, firearms were sold like any other commodity. You could by a gun in a lot of hardware stores, sporting goods shops, automotive supply shops, Sears, Montgomery Wards and even by mail order! Most likely, after about 5-10 years the sales receipts would be purged from any document storage they used.
