I have a S&W Model 14 which I use for Distinguished Revolver competition. I love the gun but would like it to be a little heavier. Unfortunately, for Distinguished Revolver, the gun must be stock and not modified.

I have seen a Model 17 with a an underlug as part of the stock gun. I believe it is a Model 17-6. I was wondering if there is a stock S&W Model 14 with a similar underlug? If this was a factory configuration, then it would be permissible under the current rules. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What you are looking for is.....

Model 14-5, Model 14-6 or Model 14-7....
These were made with full underlugged barrels. A very few M14-6's were made with 4" barrels.

Good luck, these are not easy to find these days....

I have a distributor that has a few 6" 686s' chambered .38 special only, if you would be interested.

HG356, Are these 686s built with .38 length cylinders or are they regular 686s simply chambered for .38?

I actually just picked up a 14-5 last week from a great gunshop here in NC that took it in on an estate sale. I'd been thinking a model 14 with a 6 inch full underlug barrel might make a great retro division ICORE gun - and one just happened to show up at Ed's, so I jumped on it.

I didn't realize they made a 4 inch version - that might just make the perfect IDPA SSR gun!

A little more than 100 were made over a 4-5 year period for Roper Police Supply in Picayune, Mississippi.
Here's the flyer from them.

P.S., if anyone has the gun in the flyer (RB gripframe), I'd dearly love to trade for it, even if it meant using one of my SB 4" Roper guns... :)

Do you know what the engineering change and $$ are for that M686?
I'd be curious to know........ (darn, another wierd and kinky S&W, my favorite!!)

What's the accuracy on these like? Are they as good as the Model 14s? Are the ergonomics the same as the Model 14? I really like the Model 14 that I have now, I just wish it was a little less "whippy" and heavier.

I'm going to check one out tomorrow, sku#164638. I'm pretty sure they're 6-shot not +s' simply chambered .38 depth. I'll post more when I find out. The K & L use the same grips, trigger reach so the weight would be the main difference. They give the 6" 686 6-shot a weight of 44oz. I would guess the 14 in the 38-40oz range but I'm not sure.

Yes there is, and it was introduced specifically for Distinguished Revolver.

/c

The 6 inch full under lug came out some years before the NRA Distinguished revolver program started. I have both M14 with and without the under lug and I prefer without. The full under lug pre dates the Harry Reaves Match at Camp Perry as I can remember the chatter on the Bullseye mail list. The Harry Reaves match allows any center fire over.30 with a 2 1/2# trigger pull (as near as I remember)

OK, I checked one of these out they are a 686-6, 6", 6-shot, IL, Patridge frt/Black rear, Hogue conversion grips. Appears to have the standard cylinder that is short chambered for the .38s'. Listed weight 44oz. The one I looked at had a fired case dated 9/08

I believe Chuck Jones was refering to the Police Combat Distinguished Revolver program. Which the 14-5/6/7 were created for , because of request for an underlugged revolver that was K frame to match most open class PPC guns. Bob
