Found this nice model 581, .357 Magnum at a local shop yesterday. Looks like it never saw much, if any, holster use.

Jut noticed from the photo that the grips seem a little oversized but I plan on getting some nice target style grips anyway. It shoots way better than I can. Sort of reminds of my Model 10 S&W issued to me in 1966 with the State Police. However, the frame is definitely beefier and these can allegedly handle many, many hot .357 Magnum load with no ill effects as compared to the standard "K" frame guns.

I really like the fixed sights on this gun. I do remember cutting my finger on a Model 19 rear adjustable sight when on duty and wrestling with a bad guy many years ago. Shot this gun with both 158 grain .357 Magnum and 158 grain .38 Special rounds yesterday. They both hit at almost the same point of impact at 7 yards which is good enough for me. I read somewhere that these sights are regulated for 158 grain loads.

These 581's were subject to a recall due to some minor cylinder binding with hot ammo. However, I checked and mine has been updated by the factory. (There is an "M" stamped just above the model number in the yoke.)

Not sure about the green insert in the front sight. All the ones I have seen have been red. It does look like a factory installation however. (Any info on that green insert front sight deal would be appreciated.)

Called S&W and they advised the gun was made in 1983.

I could really play the "old guy" role here and say "No more plastic guns for me". However, at my age I do find that my 6 oz. P32 is usually in my front pocket when I go out.

(PS: I found this name of the gun "S&W Model 581 "Distinguished Service Magnum", on several web sites. Sort of cool, I thought. Also found this, MODEL 581 (DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MAGNUM) .357 Mag. cal., L-Frame, fixed sights, 4 in. full lug barrel, 6 shot, blue or nickel finish, 38 oz. Disc. 1992.)

I was just thinking that a Tyler T grip adapter, would be perfect (I always had one installed on my MSP guns. I also noticed that the stock grips were just fine even with full power .357 loads.

Thanks for the reply. I just checked and the Tyler adapters are still available.

Nice gun. Enjoy it. I've never seen a green insert out of S&W, but there used to be a company that sold a kit to replace the insert with one of a different color. Had, as I recall, insert material that was placed in the slot and then a clamp or something went over the sight to hold the stuff in place while it hardened. Probably not hard to get a professional looking result. Might still be available...I haven't seem them in a long while.

Nice 581 you have there! I have Herrett targets on my 586 no dash. They are kind of beaters, but feel great. (bought them that way) Enjoy your L frame! Bob

Nice one......looks like a shooter.......haven't seen a 581 in a LGS in many many years....

My problem with owning "nice" 581/586s is that when I go to get a L-frame to shoot...... I always grab a 686.

I've got 3 Safe Queen 586s and in a dumb move about 10 years ago traded off a SQ 581.......for a nice 66-nutin... IIRC.

I looked at a blue M581 about an hour ago. Feller wanted $500. Probably a decent price, but I've never warmed up to the L frames. Shot a bunch of them over the years, but have always preferred either the M13/19/66 or the M27/28.

I was issued one of these briefly in the '80s before we got combat Tupperware. It was sadly turned in and went to the grinder. It is one of the only .357 chambered revolvers I would consider buying if one at a decent price came my way.

Congratulations, that's a great find! Heck, I can't even remember the last time I've seen one for sale. I like your comment about the fixed sights. I have the Md 681 and it is my all-time favorite revolver that I shoot. Incredibly accurate.

It wasn't uncommon in the 80s and maybe 90s to have inserts of some color installed. The gunsmith just cut the slot and applied the material, let it harden and shaped it. I've seen them in a lot of S&W and Colts that came with simple ramps. If you want a different color, it's an inexpensive change. Congrats, it looks like a great gun.

I fought getting any "L" frames for a long time because I am such a huge fan of anything with a pin in the barrel. I bought a few early no dash models (all used) and developed a slight affinity for them. The 581/681 models are by far my favorites of the L's and may be among the most beautiful models ever built by S&W, IMO. BTW, that green insert didn't come from the factory.
