RE: 617 firing pin design

Submitting this info for the gunsmiths out there, maybe someone could follow up with another firing pin design.

Posted the research on my car forum. As a FYI only works for me...

S&W Model 617 (22 rimfire) fail to fire fix

You posted your "research" on a car forum? Why? There are many thousand of this model that others very rarely have posted about this issue about. Why do you suppose there is a problem with the design of the firing pin? There are several reasons for failure of ammunition to fire in any type of gun, starting with it needs to be cleaned!! There may be internal debris from firing, lint, etc. The mainspring may be weak or the strain screw may be backed out, the ammunition may be defective, etc.....

Did you even try different ammunition? How many FTF have you had, one dozens? Did you check the strain screw? It is supposed to be tight. It is not an adjustment!

Make sure the strain screw is tight first and try different ammunition and let us know what the result was. A loose strain screw is by far the greatest reason for failures to fire with any S&W revolver, regardless of caliber. Many (hundreds/thousands) have tried to lighten the trigger pull by backing out the strain screw and then wonder why the gun doesn't fire! I had many come into various shops I worked in about failures to fire with S&Ws and guess what, most of the guns had loose strain screws!!

If you have a question about guns ask them on a gun forum. If about cars then ask them on a car forum!:D:D:D

Finally, what the heck is this supposed mean?: Posted the research on my car forum. As a FYI only works for me...

Do an Internet search 617 the FTF condition is more common than you think

yes, many, yes, yes, one FTF in certain conditions is too many

see previous response, talking rim fire not center fire, main spring tension was discussed

Pinned it on my car forum as a reference point for any future use, I control the post and attachments. Yes - works for me..maybe it won't for you..again submitted as a FYI -

Comparing the noted ammo manufacturers proper firing pin strike location on the 22 rim and where the pin actually hits with the 617 was my concern. Study the attachments.

Again I was just trying to help with a condition you obviously are not aware of.

I fired 22LR ammo from several manufactures, had regular FTF and noted what worked "for me".

PEACE!

Basically you are modifying the tip of firing pin so it doesn't hit the very edge of rim and waste energy on collapsing the edge that is directly opposed to the strike, plus with a smaller tip the energy is more focused.

I have no doubt it improves ignition. But, I have several K frame 22lr and a late model I frame with a coil spring and they all go bang every time, so I have never checked out the firing pins on any of them.

I hear a lot more complaints about the later 617s, but sure do I hear way more complaints about later model guns, although all of them I have work flawlessly
