S&W model 66 question

Hello everyone,first time on this forum so I hope you can help.I have a 66 2 1/2 inch barrel in great condition. I went to the auction sites to find out what it is worth and could not beleive the prices.The question I have is why the hight prices? Im I missing something? Thanks for any info.SGT61

Welcome to the forum, everything has when up in price, your 66 is going for $550 around here. The only thing I think that will come down in price is ammo and reload supplies.

Welcome to the forum. The 66 is no longer built and there is no replacement newly made that does not have a built in lock. I just brought two 66's this month here.

I think that the 66 is much in demand for three reasons: (1) it is a great gun; (2) it's not being built any more; and (3) all but the most recent versions are without a lock. I have a 66-no dash, the first model of that gun, and it is an absolute joy to shoot.

welcome to the forum.
one of the reasons that the M66 2-1/2" is so popular is because its all SS and weights enough that it will handle .357mag loads with a lot less recoil then one of the light weight snubs.
I carry the same exact gun every day loaded with .357mag CCI JHP's for road trips and .38spl+P CCI JHP for town carry.
with hogue rubber grips on mine, it is very comfortable to shoot with someone that has a bit of uncle Arthur in there fingers.

I picked up a 66-3, 2.5" bbl in v nice shape about a month ago for a bit under $400. I thought it was underpriced a bit for this area.

I've had my 66-2 for a few years now and it's my favorite gun to shoot, it was $400 at a ATF auction. Has a 2" barrel and now I'm looking for one with a 4" barrel.

hoping to get a J frame next week to fill the gap between the I frame and K frame..

I paid way too much last November when I bought my no-dash in allegedly unfired condition for $650. Do I regret buying it? Not for a moment!!!

I think some of the allure of the 66 is the fact that it is a K frame, and if you wanted a K frame with adjustable sights in a 357, the choices are only the 19 or the 66. I'm a fan of the K frame and still think with a round butt it is as close to perfect as Smith has made. Too bad, for the most part, it's a thing of the past.

They evidently will not make them as nice as the pre lock 66 again. Perfect do everything revolvers, the K-frame magnums. Regards 18DAI.

Ah the Model 66 - my first gun. Paid $250 new back in the 1980's. Took it to a very good gunsmith (NuLine Guns in MO.) and had him do his best action job, and it's like butta.

Still have the gun and it's one of my favorites. Why is it so many of S&W's best guns are no longer made? And when are they going to get rid of the stupid Hillary Hole? I'd like to buy more S&W's but it's hard to accept the internal lock.

I just picked up an "almost new" 66-3 for $400. I was a bit surprised too by the price, but it's accurate, works great and seems to have spent the better part of the last twenty years in a nightstand.

I picked up my first smith in march, 66-2 4 inchier, its the best shooter I own, love that gun, picked it up for 500 but gun prices in Wisconsin are always really high

After the election gun prices went on a tear with prices going up ,up, up and gun stores selling out. This has finally started to slow down quite dramatically and I have seen more guns available and prices dropping back some.

On the auction sites prices are higher because some don't even charge to list the gun so if guy puts them up there at a high price hoping for someone to come along and buy it. They will finially start to drop the price after a while. I've even seen some pretty good deals on them in the pasrt few weekSnub nose S&W have been hot because of the surge of people getting concealed carry licenses. Our gun club can't keep up to the demand for CCW classes and we are doing them at a record rate.
