S&W serial no. grips

Does anyone know when S&W started and stopped stamping the last four digits of the serial number on the inside of the right hand grip?

Mid to late 1970's is what the SCSW states, I think there is more to it than that. Meaning magna's were due to their fitted nature and items like the Targets, less so. How's that for a non-answer.

For standard stocks, they were numbered since the very earliest production, and I've seen them numbered into the mid-late 1970s. Target stocks were infrequently stamped as they were considered to not need individual fitting to a grip frame. Others here can be more precise as to the dates. Hope this is helpful.
