S&W3000....870 clone?

Picked up an od green duracoated 3000 with an 18" bbl the other day and was amazed at how light the shotgun was. I'm looking forward to shoot it this weekend but I'm curious to know if this shotgun was modeled after the Remington 870. It looks like an 870 and kinda feels like one too. Is there a connection between the 3000 and the 870? Just curious.............

I was told by a Smith and Wesson Armorer trainer in the late 1980s that there wer a LOT of connection with the 870!

I think of it as a metric version of the 870.
