I have been trying to locate Winchester's customer service on the web. I was at the range today and was shooting my 648 using Winchester SuperX ammo and the shells were hard to eject and noticed that the some of the shells were split about 1/2 way up. Then I started to shoot my SW9M and shot 3 rounds and the slide blew up at the back and it broke the grip on both sides where the spring pin goes through, also it blew out the bottom of the clip and I was using Winchester USA 115gr fmj. I don't know what their policy is so I was trying to contact them and then also notify S&W and see if it may be a problem with the gun. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some initial thoughts

First, the 648 is chambered for .22 Magnum ammo which has a larger diameter case than .22LR. If you were using .22LR ammo you could most definitely get split cases (how do I know that?).

As far as the 9mm blow up is concerned, my first thought is a barrel obstruction of some kind. I agree you should send the gun to S&W for a thorough checkup. It is possible the ammo was the cause but I really put that at a low probability.

Hope this helps and that you're not hurt!

I just sent some Winchester rimfire ammo back to Winchester for inspection. Sent a bulk box of Xpert HV .22lr ammo that had loose heads, that would twist and spin on the case, and a box of Winchester Dynapoint 22WMR that would fail to eject in my Marlin 882-case rim seemed to be out-of-round. The contact person I had gotten ahold of from Winchester was a Sheryl Forbeck, her contact number is: (618) 258-3300. Hope this helps.

P.S. They sent me two $20 Winchester ammunition coupons after inspection of ammo I sent back. Took a couple months.

I was using Super X 22 magnum jacketed h.p. in the 648 as far as the SW9M goes I don't know what happened to it.

Magazine. Sorry. I had to.

Howdy

Hi 41,
I'd hang on to some of what you have left and not surrender it all.
You might want to pull and weigh one if you have enough and see if anyone you know can identify the powder.
Good luck
Mike

So two different calibers and lots of ammo were producing overpressure in two different guns...?

What conditions were the boxes of ammunition in before the incidents? i.e., were they sitting in the sun, in front of a heater, anything like that? Had both guns recently been cleaned?

Definitely preserve everything as it is until you can contact Winchester and S&W.

Some detailed photos of your S&W would be great. We will not be able to tell you what happened, but we can speculate endlessly and that is always entertaining.

Have you had any black cats cross in front of you lately?; broken any mirrors? You sure have had a run of bad luck with the two firearms!

If the ammo is at fault, please keep the lot/part numbers, in case you want to warn others to avoid this particular ammo.
