Anyone from up that way have some feedback on what the town is like? I have an interview for a role up there that would be hard to pass up. Would be looking to rent condo and keep the florida place....if one had to live within 20 minutes of there and wanted a view of the lake, where should one look. Doing some early due diligence.

Thanks

In the winter when the wind comes in off the lake, it is just to darn cold!🥶

Cedar Point is one of the best amusement parks around.

Close to Port Clinton ( Camp Perry)

I don't know if they get the lake effect snow like Cleveland but you should check.

By the way, there are at least three Sandusky's in Ohio, Little Sandusky, Upper Sandusky and Sandusky.

Port Clinton & Catawba Island are nice places...in the summer month. It's cool in the winter. They have stripped down cars that pull ice fishing sheds out on the lake. 3-6 feet of ice on the lake isn't uncommon in many spots. There used to be a bar called the Bell Mell in the town of Pt. Clinton. The other direction to the East gets a little summer touristy in the one summer month. It's actually pretty nice up there anywhere along the lake. Stay away from Cleve Land, though; they have people that bark at you in an area called the Dawg Pound.

I grew up in northern Ohio on both sides of Cleveland. The lake effect snow belt is more concentrated east of Cleveland going up into New York.

Of course, you can't forget the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland.

Port Clinton is known for its walleye fishing. The picture is of me with the statue of Wylie the Walleye in Port Clinton.

Right after Christmas in 2021, my brother and I decided to run the coastal roads instead of taking the freeway back to northeast Ohio. We ended up in Sandusky and found a great restaurant called Daly's Pub at Columbus Avenue and Water Street. The special that day was the meatloaf and one of the other patrons flagged me down and suggested that I order it, so I did. Out came a slab of meatloaf the size of a paving stone and it was great. At least back then the prices were quite reasonable. And of course, in line with the Irish theme of the premises, I gave the waitress a stack of Golden Dollars and a $2 bill and in my best Irish accent I told her it was some "leprechaun gold and Christmas green." I'm definitely going back if I get up that way again.

Mmmmm! Fried Walleye cheeks! Snapping turtle stew. Salmon fillets. Perch pan fried in butter. I was at one party in the fall up there. Everyone brought the bountiful summer trophies and they cooked some of the best lake food you could ever ask for. And there was beer, some Harleys, some muscle cars, some centerfolds, and no fights and happiness around for everyone. They did that every year at this one dude's house I guess. Good times!

I took the kids night-fishing on the isthmus between Catawba Island and Sandusky in July a bunch of years ago. We heard something that sounded like a B29 coming across the water. Turned out to be about 6 kajillion little green flying insects. We skiddattled back to the van pretty darned quickly. The dome light from inside the van when we opened its doors attracted about 3 kajillion of those things. I don't think that I ever got them all out of that van. Mayflies are another story; they measure them in depths of inches when they die and get swept into the street. But the fish sure seem to like 'em. -S2

PS the wines up there are great to enjoy while on the beaches, but they don't travel well.

That part of Lake Erie has great walleye fishing in the fall. A number of charters go out of Huron Ohio and you can see the rides at Cedar Point from the boat.

My Grandparents, Parents and myself camped and fished out of Put-In-bay about 55 years ago. We use to go to Pelee Island whenever the lake wasn't to rough. Good memories!

Wonderful beautiful place to visit or even live there. The Lyman Boat company was founded there, and since I own a classic Lyman woodie I probably am prejudiced.

Cleveland isn't far off. Another fine place to go.

Now, if you are a woosie and don't like snow, you might not like it there. SNOW is the operative word....it's not that cold there.

Personally, I would jump at a chance to work there. If you gave me Miami as the alternate, I would quit.

Being that you're keeping the Florida place for going to when it's winter in Sandusky, sounds OK I guess. I live in an eastern suburb of Cleveland on the lake shore and go to Cedar Point many times, 487 times so far (I'm a rollercoaster nut). In the winter, or when Cedar Point is not open/operating, Sandusky is a relatively dead town. The draw to Sandusky are the islands and Cedar Point. I think the first weekend in June is 'bike week', many motorcycles. There are a few waterparks in the area. Once you get out of Sandusky, there are no suburbs, all country.
Sandusky does not get lake effect snows.
In the spring, the frozen/cold Lake Erie keeps the temperatures colder than surrounding areas. outdoor temps don't get pleasant until May. In the fall, the Lake Erie warm waters keep the area pleasant all the way into November. The lake has a huge effect on the area.
Ohio is a good gun show state.
Hope this helps.

Sandusky, Port Clinton, Huron, they are all summer tourist type towns. My wife and I used to rent a place up in that area twice a year for business. Depending on when you are going to be up there, many places might be available. Or very few. Most folks rent them and reserve them for years.

What areas would be good to look for housing? If I take this job, I'll be up there most of the time for at least a few years. Nice to know about restaurants and fishing(an activity in which I do not participate), but I am trying to get an idea of where to look for a place to live

Unless you really like cold weather and don't need sunlight, it is a living death from November to April. If you have been in Florida for a while, plan on being sick until your blood thickens. Try to find a home next to the office because some of the commutes will be BRUTAL. The brief but wonderful summer almost makes up for it. Forget the lake unless it is next to the office. No visibility following the tracks of the guy ahead of you hoping that he does not stop because you will hit him if he does. You may not get the lake effect snow, but you will get too much and too often. Especially if you are not experienced driving in snow and ice. Get four wheel drive and anti-depressants, and plan trips back to Florida every month in the winter. Best thing is wherever you live after North east Ohio (except Buffalo, Detroit or Newark) will seem like paradise, The natives don't mind because they are numb and sort of hibernate. A former north east Ohio resident.

Are you buying, renting, leasing? Do you need schools nearby?

Huron is not that far to drive, a bit south and east. North and west is Port Clinton. Both are smallish towns, both cater to summer tourists. No big towns in the area.

Good luck!

No kids, would prefer to rent because I may only be looking at a few years. Could buy if that is the only way to get into a decent area. We looked at Huron. Is that a decent area?
