Sardines in mustard sauce

Dad's best friend would come over to watch the Friday Night Fights. A block of Limburger cheese, Dusseldorf mustard, Vidalia onion, dark rye and Hudepohl beer.

Hudepohl beer, that's something I haven't heard about since my brother moved away from the Cincinnati area years ago. I always liked a cold frosty mug of Hudepohl with a slab of ribs at the Montgomery Inn.

I have not Had any Sardines of any kind for a long time.
This does bring back Memmories eating them with my parents on Ritz crackers and Onion
And like Golddollar we would eat Limburger cheese and onions also on Ritz cracker

If i wasnt on a low carb Diet Crackers, Sardines, and Limburger cheese would be on the Shopping list
And hey dont forget the Braunswiger

I don't care for sardines, but always have a supply on hand for trapping coons. I recall that the sardines in mustard bait always went ignored - but skunks didn't seem to mind.

Nor would I feed it to any critter I owned.

My dad raised bird dogs when i was a very young kid, he fed them sardines to sparkle the coat. I saw Mom eating a can of sardines and ran from the room crying " Moms eating dog food", everyone just laughed, I was maybe 4.
I love sardines today, but prefer fish oil, which I can't find or other oil. Take a 3 day hike, take 5 days food!!!

Once in a while when my Dad came home from work he would make sandwiches of dark rye bread, sweet onion, mustard, and Limburger cheese.
We would sit on the front porch, late at night, and eat our sandwiches and have a beer or two with them.

I just ordered some Limburger cheese last evening.:D

I love them, but due to health concerns I have become a big label reader. Sadly, many of the sardines on the market are "product of China" I will not buy any food from there.

I love all kinds of canned fish. They say to avoid anything from China because they have no health restrictions. Their sardines could have come from a sewer outlet.

Sardines in water have a really strong odor. I took some to work and everybody complained.

While stationed in Germany there was a club close by that always had dark rye bread, pickled herring and sliced white onion on a side board. If you were drinking beer, it was all you can eat.
I was stationed 15K south of Frankfurt, Henninger Brau was my go to beer. When I got there the going rate was .25M per .5L or 4 beers for a buck...about the same rate as what a beer went for in the states back then...but the difference, forgetaboudit.

The SEASON brand, available at Wally, or Costco is my new hands-down preferred sardine outta the can. However, Beech Cliff, Star-Kist or other typical brands are okay with some added hot sauce, lol. Be careful of 'Kippered' snack canned fish, and all 'potted meats'. Nitrates and Nitrites are
not good for us.
