I Picked up a very nice S&W Schofield second Model the Ser # is 5889 has a tiny P proof and a E on the frame.
The barrel has a E then a P on it.
The ser # on the back of the Cylinder has a E under it as well like this

5889
E

The guns a beauty but i cant make out if the Butt has a US on it or Not I think or am guessing Not any help with this ser # 5889 would be great.
Yes i will get a Roy Jinks letter on it but only if its a military gun or was.

This gun is like new mechanicaly i meen new the bore is minty and the gun shuts up tight perfect checkering on the hammer still sharp.
Thanks in advance (:

The "E" stamp is the inspector's stamp. There were 5 sub-inspectors, at the time the 2nd models were inspected, with the last name beginning with "E" ( Chas. Evans, Michael Egar, A.C.Edson, Geo. Estes & a man named Emery) so which one stamped your revolver is your guess. It is a military revolver and a factory letter will so state, although the shipping dates were not recorded in the shipping ledger, so the letter will uses the invoice date when S&W billed the Army for the shipments. Ed.
