Dunno about gulls, but I read somewhere in a long poem that it's bad luck to kill an albatross...

During my last visit to the San Diego zoo I saw a bunch of gulls mug a young boy of 6-8 for his cotton candy. They were utterly ruthless. They have had to equip all the food places with a sort of entrance maze roofed in netting to stop the birds wandering in. They are usually reluctant to enter a place if they cannot see a quick way out. This might work for the gulls but the Brewer's Blackbird that sat at my feet watching me eat did not get the memo. Either that or he was using the place to shelter from the gulls too.

That's correct. The (Federal) law also protects songbirds but there are exceptions. English Sparrows and Starlings are examples of birds considered invasive and not protected under Federal law.

I duck hunt mostly at the south end of San Francisco Bay in the salt ponds in the Don Edwards NWR. I use a boat to access an old leeve that is cut off so is now an island. I knocked down a Spoonie in the pond that the boat was not in. As it was a long way to the cut to get to the other side I just kept an eye on it figuring I would pick it up on the way back to the truck. The gulls were worrying it but I did not think they would do too much damage to it. By the time I picked it up all that was left was the wings and back. After that I always made the trip to keep the gulls from eating my kill.

Back to school tennies--cool.
I've been known to "catch and release" a few sea gulls, casting live bait while fishing. I have to put on gloves and use needle-nose pliers to get the hook out of their beaks. You have to reel them in slow so as not to break the fishing line, or else they fly off trailing the fishing line behind them. If that happens, they end up getting the fishing line tangled up in the mangroves and dying a horrible death.

The local Chinese restaurant here is run by Russians and the food isn't even remotely like what we're used to calling "Chinese". Alex is in charge of ordering the food when we eat out. A sizzling plate of tiny legs on vegetables arrived. I was told it was "baby chicken". I felt this was rather cruel but had to admit they were tender and tasty. While eating the second or so, I was asked if it tasted a "little fishy". I was immediately suspicious, recalling we are on a sea coast with tons of gulls and that Russians will eat anything.

I think protecting certain animals is a good thing, but sea gulls?? Whoever wrote that law was probably ingesting too much LSD while reading Johnastan Livingston Seagull back in the 70's.

Sea gulls are carrion eaters (scavengers) & as such do much good toward keeping our water ways from being a stinking cess pool. If you have ever been on a fish stream after a major spawn, it would be very clear what a job they do in processing lots of mother nature's waste.
