I dont have alot of tacticool stuff on my weapons... The stuff i do have is top tier thus priced as such... Just look at the prices of Daniel Defense, LaRue, Troy, Aimpoint, Surefire, Battlecomp, etc.... I will admit that i have more than one box of junk but have since learned my lesson... Buy Once Cry Once.

There may be a serious problem going on here on this forum. At what point do some of the mods on our 15-22s cross over into the zone? Is it really necessary to mount something on every inch of our quad rails? Is there something pushing us into this zone? Could it be some mental deficiency that could be cured by taking the right vitamins? Did we drink too much beer, or not enough? I am deeply worried for all of us here...why is my head throbbing right now?

I really don't understand this problem you speak of. I know for sure that I don't have a problem. Nope, not me. It's all of you that have the problem. I'm fine......

And there is no such thing as too much beer....it just leads to buying more accessories.....Ooops did I say that?

I think that the only cure for this disorder is to forge ahead and get all of the bad mall ninja configurations out of the system so you can settle on a configuration you are happy with. After all the **** I've bought, my 15-22 now only wears a Magpul MVG grip on the forend.

Some of us, with actual real world experience on the battlefield, just like to have something to remind us of those times. Mine's set up pretty much the way I carried in Iraq.

That's the very same logic I used when I wanted to buy a D model M60. When I saw the prices I decided that the little round hole in my thigh was enough of a reminder and a lot cheaper, too.

I am, however, well armed for the zombie apocalypse! And thanks for your service!

I do agree with you for the most part and understand. I DO love my AR's. BUT,there will be NO Colt M-16 or Colt AR's (I do love their handguns) on my rack or gun case in this house. I had the first run M-16 and M-16A1's in Viet-Nam. To remind me of those days,It would be a SMASH/TRASHED/RUSTED/BUSTED made by "Mattel they're swell" Jam-o-matic piece of **** in pieces in a glass case with a brass name plate with all the names of all my "comrades" in arms that died because of that un-reliable (at the time "early model") piece of JUNK !

This thread brings up a far larger issue. That is, why do we care about some possessions? It's not even keeping up with the Joneses.

Many literary folks make lists like, "The ten books a man should read in his life." I think we have a list of guns a man should own or he doesn't get his 'man card' punched.

For example, I was about forty years old when Bangor Punta owned SW. I bought a 629 in that era, it came out of time and poorly polished. It left my home very quickly.

But shortly thereafter, the 624 came out, and I bought the four-inch model. What a great revolver! It was polished, it's action was almost old-world, and it punched paper like a target pistol. My best friend came into my gunroom one afternoon, and examined the gun.

He asked me how it shot when compared with the 629. When I informed him that revolver had been sold, he asked me what magnum had replaced it. I told him it had not been replaced. Since he knew that my Python had been sold years ago he looked at me in surprise and stated, "You mean you don't own any magnums--at all!"

The fact that I was happier didn't seem to occur to him.

I don't deer hunt anymore, the compact Ruger .243 is gone. The varmint rifles have left. I had planned a trip that never materialized and the .45-70 Marlin Guide Gun went. I still produce testosterone.

Now my friends are pushing around over-priced, bloated garbage wagons. They polish more than they ride. I ride so that I have something to really polish, but it's a smaller "48."

Shouldn't we buy and shoot what we like? My .22LR is an early stainless Ruger 10/22. I out-shoot ARs, and no black plastic rifles haunt my dreams. I don't need or want them. It seems so simple to me, yet I know people still collect things as society dictates.

I (try) to stick with Quality,useful and practical. There's also the comfort level like hand grips,better iron sights.... without going overboard. Then the "hand me down" box from my higher end AR upgrades that get passed down. Do it right,buy once,cry once.

I have aquired a ton of 'stuff' over the years. I have tried 3 or 4 different BUIS shcemes, and at least 3 scope/gunsight setups. I have added 2 floater quad forends. All the accessorizing is in the name of high performance and the lightest weight. The stuff I keep on my rifles has been arrived at through conscious & deliberate support of the industry. My main AR has magpul sights, an Eotec, a YHM floating quad and a hotrod streamlight. It ain't a bone stocker, but it is a hooked up piece in terms of performance, reliability and ease of handling. I give my son his choice of all the leftovers. Even so, between us we have more than enough equipment to set up more rifles. Some stuff lives on my 20' a-3 h-bar 'til I can offload it or something more to my requirements comes along.
And besides, there is the used/ second hand market to keep in business. Boys just love to trade & pass stuff around.

I've always seen the accessorizing as a means of perpetuating the excitement one feels from the original purchase. A way to stave off post consumer depression I believe.

Maddmax makes some big-time sense since those early "3-prong" M16's were Officially Approved, High-Command Stipulated deadly junk! I got an A1 handed me when I hit country in December of '68 and an E-7 in my face telling me to "clean that sum-bitch like you was gonna eat soup outa the ejector port!" and I was in Intel! The Word had come down that these plastic pop-guns did not like to be untidy and would kill you if you neglected their hygiene. I have a 15-22 because my right hand remembers where the controls were on that old M16 and I put some inexpensive do-dads on it just to kinda see what the guys on the pointy-end of the spear are using these days. What I won't own is anything resembling an AK or any of it's cousins; I was targeted by and lost friends to those things and while it may be senseless, I can't bring myself to have one of them (or something that looks like them) in my home. I can't hunt or do motorcycles anymore so I mess with my guns and my cameras and keep my family wondering what I'll be holding when I finally go bonkers: a 1911 or a Canon?

As for the AK and such, I've thought the same thing. How can someone buy an AK (clone) when these weapons have been on the other side of our battlefields on just about every continent for decades? How many of our soldiers have been killed by AK's? I don't even want to know!

But, look at some of our worst enemies in the past such as Japan and Germany. They are our BFF's now! Can you imagine a day when many of our current enemies become our BFF's? Okay, I guess I am stretching things a bit now...<alzheimer's is kicking in>what was the original thread about?

Well it could of been the weapon you use in Vietnam (as in stolen from the enemy).

Few veterans I know from Vietnam also thought their M16 was a piece and taken every opportunity to take the AK's from their enemy.

This problem is what makes me proud to be American. Where we spend our own money to do whatever we want to our firearms, like we do our hot rods, houses and Harleys.

I think I should have been born an American! I do all of those things...but in the UK it all costs a fortune!

I agree on that 100%.

For me personally, I look back on the stuff that was "popular," and I remember the stuff that was both fun and functional.

It's amazing how much stuff you buy just from peer group pressure, even if it's subtle teasing. And I regret the stuff I bought in doing that, it was a waste of time and money. One of the best things about gray hair is that I an now 'eccentric' or 'old school.'
