Sgt. Mike Viet Nam Humor

Always thought I wanted a Mule. Saw a few in-country and a couple had recoiless rifles mounted and a couple with an M-60 mounted. Never could figure out how to steal one and ship it home..........

You can find Mules for sale at MVPA meets and in their magazine, IIRC they are around $8K and up! crazy….

Keep us posted on what LtCol.(RET.) Tom thinks of it.
From the keyboard of a retired Warthawg pilot.

"Hey, dad. That's hilarious. I certainly didn't mind the amenities that got us that reputation. Haha. I do think it was pretty generous to lump the navy in with the Marines. They're pretty casual when they're not underway. Ha."

At least there's leg room!
Depends on the cargo and/or if they have it configured with a double row of seats down the center................ Many times I was able to hang a mesh hammock from the pack up boxes and sleep most of the way.

Have flown everywhere from U Tapao, Thailand to Sigonalla, Sicily and a lot of points in between multiple times. Cargo aircraft always got us there. Most of it was as "Lead Maintenance Crew" or "Chase Maintenance Crew" for our own aircraft.

Have parked my butt in jump seats on C-130's and C-141's for more miles than I care to think about.
Going from Japan to VN in a fully loaded C-130. Jump seats on either side and vehicles and equipment down the middle. There was a brief stop in Okinawa to repair a fuel pump. Sat on the tarmac until the woke up some AF mechanics. We offered to fix it but the AF declined. It took them three hours to fix the plane. After the plane was fixed we droned on to VN, lots of noise and no insulation. Also found out what the funnel in the front of the plane was for.
Oh the fun we had.

Picked up the 25th book from the author as he's known as " crazy Dave" at our VFW. Guess the 3 other of us named Dave are ok. Ok book with really good pics although some Glaring mistakes on vehicles and USMC V US Army troops.
Second book is one of the flat out Best books I've read on Vietnam by a combat Veteran. Guy I know with a pawn shop gave it to me Thursday and I finished it this AM.

A couple comments before I head to the gun show

I have hitched a few rides in the back of the C-130, back and forth to Panama and LRAFB to Eglin. It is not a comfortable ride, as the altitudes they normally run at is right down in the weather. The C-5 is much better.

We flew the guys of the "Electric Strawberry" a lot in 1969. More night extractions than I care to remember. When that many tracers and air dropped flares light up the night skys (like on the cover of that book) you know you are flying into the jaws of hell. It's not the red tracers you worry about. It's the BIG green ones from the 12.7mm's coming your way that do bad things to a helicopter.

Today I wear a t-shirt with a likeness of the statute of the grunts by the Viet Nam War Memorial to honor those grunts. 25th ID, 9th ID, 199th ID Light, 5th SFG, and the ARVN's. God bless you all.
