Shield 9 Magazine Safety Question

I'm fairly new to guns, so forgive me if my question is ridiculous.

I recently noticed that when releasing a loaded magazine, it would tend not to fall freely from the weapon. It falls a fraction of an inch then stops. If I give the magazine an outward tug it will then slide out freely.

I decided to do this with the slide locked back. I noticed that the magazine safety pin (is that what it's called?), as the magazine begins to release downward, slides along the magazine then catches on the rim of the top-most bullet, right next to the primer. This is enough to stop the magazine from a free fall.

I wasn't too concerned about that initially, but then began to wonder if there was any possibility that this could cause a discharge?

It seems like if the magazine safety pin was curved a bit, even just at the top, this wouldn't happen.

Any ideas or advice?

Thanks!

The magazine disconnect on the Browning Hi-Power drags on the magazine and can prevent it from ejecting. I had it removed from mine. The M&P magazine disconnect is easily removed.

Sometimes the 8-round magazine catches on my palm instead of ejecting cleanly. Verify that this is not the problem or part of the problem.

I think it is incredibly unlikely that the magazine safety lever* is capable of detonating the primer.

* That's the name used in the armorer's manual

Thank you. I should say that I was able to repeat this while insuring that my hand wasn't in any way inadvertently impeding the magazine.

This has been discussed before. It only happens when there are rounds left in the mag.

The "safety lever" hangs in the ridge between the primer and the case. I can not conceive of a situation where it would ignite the primer (but I'm no expert).

If i bothers you that much, I suggest several approaches.

1. Remove the mag safety. Lot's of threads and vids on this.

2. Remove the lever and gently round over the corner that snags so it glides over the ridge. Then reinstall.

3. Be aware this happens and train for it. There may be other reasons your mag doesn't drop free and you must pull it out (dirt, debris, wrong angle).

funny, with a loaded mag in my Shield, hit the mag release button and out pops the magazine.

indeed a strange situation.

The state compliant versions have a mag safety, the others don't. Guessing you don't have a magazine safety.
