Just curious what your factory casing that came with your gun looks like. Mine is a 9mm Liberty +P. But the funny part is it looks as though there is a partial line around part of it, not actually a bulge but close. I just bought this gun today and have not shot it yet but am itching to do so.

I never opened up my envelope, but they test fire it with +P? I started a thread about my Shield 9 bulging +P cases so I find it interesting to say the least since they're not concerned that it's bulged like that. Guess they do deem it normal.

I've never seen a nickel plated case in a S&W test fire envelope. Did you buy this pistol new or used?

My test round looks nothing like this.
I pulled my test round out and put some calipers to it.
.385 at the top
.391 just above the base, same area measured as in your pic.

Not too sure I'd be happy with a case looking like that from my gun.

My gun DOB was 6/4/13

Just picked up a 40 yesterday and a born date of 1/24/14. Brass casing looked good to me. I also have a hard time believing they used nickel plated +P.

I'd call S&W before firing it. I don't like the looks of that case at all. That line shouldn't be there.

This is my first S&W gun I have purchased so I don't know what they normally use but that is what was in my envelope. The date on the envelope is 2/11/14.

I plan on calling them first thing in the morning. I feel like a kid at Christmas and my parents forgot to buy batteries for an electronic toy.

Contacted s&w this morning. Looks like it's going back to the factory.

Outside of checking my first handfuls of brass for good fire pin strikes a year ago I've not paid attention to my brass since. Don't have any fired brass on me now but just checked the factory case that came with my 9mm Shield and it has the identical marking like yours. Mine is standard brass though, not +P. My "born on date" is in Sept. of 2012. Never had a problem with it (approx. 500 rounds through it) but wondering if I should place a call based on your answer from S&W.

pfin3,

You should take some photos of you barrel before you send it and/or try to note some kind of identifying marks if at all possible. I'd be curious to see if they replace the barrel.

Mine is nickel RWS. Fired 1/14/2014. Looks fine to me. Fired by Cory S.

Found out today they are shipping my gun back to me. They replaced the barrel which was what I thought they would do. Got my fingers crossed. Can't wait to shoot it. Will keep you posted on the results.

Just picked up my brand new Shield 9mm on Wednesday. Test fire date of 3/11/14 by Brian C. He used +P Liberty ammo and there is a small line on my casing as well. They have to know that this is an issue if multiple items are coming back for this. Why in the world would they send a brand new firearm out if it has this so called issue. This is my first Smith and Wesson. I debated between the Shield and an SR9C....wondering if I made the wrong choice. I don't ever plan on using +P loads in the first place, so we will see how the first range session goes. All I can say is that it better be flipping good.

My son and I got our 9mm Shield's 1 week apart
he had the exact same spent test shell as you with a slight bulge
We have not run anything hotter then standard 124 Grain in it
But no Bulges on the mixed ammo,.
With the exception of some Chinese Norinco
My spent shell was brass and had no defects, but also bulgded on the Norinco ammo
It shoots everythng else fine

And Runt if you only shoot standard loads u will probably be fine
After you shoot the Shield you will appreciate it

Ok. I was told to never open the little envelope that your test round is in from my LGS when I bought my shield. He was saying something about if they ever passed some type of law where they needed to check your gun and that envelope was opened that it would take years to get your gun back if ever? Anyone know what he could have possibly meant by that?

My 40 shield has a date of 7/17/2013 and the case is a CCI aluminum (Blazer I guess) and it looks just fine. They must use a variety of test ammo. I never used any Blazer aluminum ammo, are they just plinking loads? My reloads go through it just fine no bulges or lines of any kind. 155 gr jhp with 5.5 gr of 231.
