My 40 cal. S&W Shield, having had several hundred rounds through it, will now have a primer strike without ignition 3 to 6 % of the time. All of it with practice ammo, but by different manufacturers. I believe I need a new or stronger striker spring. Do I need to order an entire new striker assembly or can I just change springs. I can remove the striker assembly but could not find anywhere how to disassemble it to change out springs.

Of the possible causes, a worn-out spring is the least likely.

The most likely is that crud has accumulated in the striker channel, or you have put lube in the channel. Remove the striker assembly, clean everything out and reassemble dry.

It is also possible that the striker tip has chipped; inspect it.

The striker assemblies are normally replaced as an assembly.

Striker assembly, pin tip, and channel all OK. Striker spring comes off easily with removal of small white plastic part (name=?). Cleaned and polished a little. Will be a few days before I am able to shoot again.

Did you solve the issue? I have the same issue with my Shield 40. After 200-300 rounds, light primer strikes maybe 5%. Cleaned out the firing pin channel, then worked fine for the next 1000 rounds. Now again light primer strikes, almost 10%. Cleaned channel again, still the same. I don't trust this gun anymore. For one, the channel shouldn't get dirty that fast and cause misfires (if that is the case). I can shoot my Glocks 5000 rounds and still not clean the channel. Second, if it is the spring, it didn't last very long and who knows when the next one will fail.
