Shield recoil spring

I bought a new Shield 9mm and broke it down to clean and oil it and when I tried to put it back together I could not get the recoil spring to go back in. I have a fair amount of experience with Glocks, Walthers and even have a SD9VE and have never had a problem. Can anyone give any advice????

well, they go back together the same way as most semi autos but new shields springs are notoriously tight. also they don't really have that little cup milled into the locking lug on the barrel that the base of the spring fits into so you just kinda have to eye ball the center. I've never really had an issue with it other than having to push on it harder than full sized guns.

Does the recoil spring compress when you push on it?
Have you searched youtube and watched a video on reassembly?

bsmiley it does not compress when I try to put it in the slide. I can compress the spring by pushing on the spring very hard.

And yes, I have watched several videos on reassembly. And everyone of them it just pops right in. I am a fairly strong guy and I have pushed as hard as possible.

In my Shield experience (3.5. Months) I place it in the front of the slide and compress with my thumb into the lug of the barrel.
Sounds like you aren't a rookie and its jammed or not compressing correctly. Call or email: ([email protected]) S&W customer service, they will mail you a replacement. Maybe include your SN in the email...

I think you are correct, it's not compressing like it should. I will call customer support Monday. Thank you very much for your replies.

You are trying too hard, Spring Assembly really doesn't compress. Just push in, down and click in place , make sure it's level and straight.

jbtrucker I am trying to attach a photo but I don't know how. I tried what you said but it appears the spring is too long????

I'd check to make sure the muzzle end of the spring assembly is properly centered in the small hole of the slide. If it's not properly in the small hole the spring assembly won't go in correctly in my experience.
