I purchase a new shield not too long ago and the recoil spring assembly is bothering me. It's hard to explain but it will only compress when the coils are orientated a certain way. After I field strip it, I have to keep rotating it in order to find the sweet spot so it will go back into the slide. Some of the coils are actually bent. I emailed s&w for a replacement...it's a great sized handgun and would love to place in my off duty carry rotation. Hopefully they send me a replacement soon. Thanks for reading my rant/vent. I'm not going to judge the product because of a faulty RSA, I believe it has the potential of being a solid weapon; just a little disappointed.

Sorry to hear about your RSA problem. I've read about a few people having RSA issues, and Smith has fixed em up with new ones. Hang in there, you'll have a fine carry piece when its all said and done.

Thanks, I appreciate it. After looking at again closely, it's defective for sure. It happens. I'm sure they'll send me a replacement.

Got a pic of your defective spring? While some of the coils may look bent, most pics posted end up looking very similar to the manual's pics.

And yes... At first, some do need to orient the spring 'just right' to get it reassembled properly, but it gets easier as the gun breaks in. (search and read the dozen or so other 'Shield Spring' threads.)

CS will send you a replacement, but don't be surprised if it looks like the one you have.

If you don't like the design, try the solution from Stainless Steel Guide Rods. Folks who have this say it's smooth as silk. I haven't yet tried it, but only because I don't want to give up my stock recoil spring assembly for them to swap the springs.

I had this issue with my .40 Shield as well. I called SW and explained the situation and they sent me a new RSA. I've had it bind up only once after field stripping it multiple times with the new assembly vs. almost every time with my original one. There is, unfortunately, an orientation for the RSA that works best. Really wish they would have made a better quality RSA to be honest.

I have a photograph of the correct way to place the RCA when reassembling. I don't seem to know how to place it here for you.
I have it setting on my desktop.
