Shield Shortage

i called larrys pistol and pawn in huntsville al. last week for the shield and was told that they didnt have any then but they would have 50 when they opened at 10 am friday morning for their s&w promotion sale that week end.

i was there at 8;45 am friday and there were people already standing at the door. at 10 am there was about 80 in line, half standing in the rain. they came to buy. guns on sale and tons of ammo stacked down the isle hip high on the floor.

i was 10 person in when they opened and went directly to one of the salesmen at the new gun counter and asked for a 9mm shield. while i was filling out paper work the guy next to me asked for a 9mm and a 40 cal shield the salseman asked if anyone else behind us was there for a shield and 4 other people asked for one
salesmen were prossing 2 customers at a time with fbi call. 10 min. after i walked up to counter, i was struggling to get through the crowd to the front door with my shield. i doubt that they had any left for saturday

btw ill take 460 for the one i have if you pick it up in florence al.

My son had the good luck to purchase the last Shield that Larry's Guns had on Tuesday at a little after noon. It was a on-line internet purchase. I had been looking all morning, and found both a 9mm, and .40 at Larry's. By the time my son got to the website the 9 was gone, but he did get the 40. He picked it up this morning, in Canton Ga, and he couldn't be happier.

I haven't heard that even one CA compliant Shield has shipped yet. We just got our first shipment of MA Shield's about a month ago. Hard to find and longggg waiting lsts at the LGS.
You won't see a Shield in CA for a while yet. It needs to be given the Board's "Official Okee-Dokee", S&W has to pay the State's "Fee" and be added to "The List".
I don't know how often the State updates their official list.

The regional LE rep told me a few weeks ago that they are backordered by 75,000 on Shields. That pretty much means that you gotta look, and you gotta be lucky.

Just got mine ordered and paid for at Vance Outdoors! $429.99. Got a hold of my local FFL and he will be sending the paperwork to them so hopefully middle of next week I will have my new gun!

Thanks for the heads up!

I ordered one from Quantico Tactical two weeks ago, but I am on a waitlist. They said they have no idea when the next shipment will be in.

"This is the Smith & Wesson Shield one of the most wanted small pistols in the U.S. But ya gotta ask yourself do you feel lucky in finding one, well do ya punk." :p LOL What an ad with Clint that would be LOL. :D

Those in CA may have a long wait for the Shield, as they do not have either a magazine safety or a loaded chamber indicator. Ditto to microstamping. The Shield does have the viewing port to see the loaded casing, but this does not qualify as a loaded chamber indicator. When the sales of the Shields finally slow down, S&W might make the modifications necessary so that the Shields can be sold in CA, NY, and MA.

The California gun law is as follows:

"In California, as of January 1, 2006, an "unsafe handgun" will include any pistol that does not have either a chamber load indicator or a magazine disconnect mechanism. As of January 1, 2007, handguns in California will be required to have both a chamber load indicator and, if they have a detachable magazine, a magazine disconnect mechanism. When this provision takes effect in 2007, California will be the only state that requires both a chamber load indicator and a magazine safety disconnect. As of January 1, 2010, California will require that all new semiautomatic pistols be equipped with microstamping technology in order to be sold in California."

The Shield has been on the MA shelves for over a month. We do not have the red flag loaded chamber indicator that the CA guns will have, but we have the view hole. We do not have the mag disconnect either in MA. What we do have that is different from the "free state" Shield is the 10# trigger. BTW, I have a MA Shield and with the APEX kit it is a joy to shoot and carry.

What the Hell is "microstamping"?

*Edit* Never mind, Googled it. sigh...

I'll be so damn glad when the San Andreas Fault sends that chunk of real estate tumbling into the sea!

Robkarrob, I didn't think micro-stamping was in effect anywhere. Can you get a link to it in the CA gun laws?

They wanted the micro-stamp, but I don't believe that part went through. (but I could definitely be mistaken :))

CalGuns is the best resource for Kommifornia Gun info:

You can look to see if a particular make/model is available here:

Both the 9mm and the 4o cal. Shield are listed on the approved roster for CA. Good for you'se guys. Don't let that red flag indicator deter you from buying a great pistola.

.40 Shields

I got lucky early on in NVA on the 9mm How are the 40s are they out in force yet. Are their availability the same as 9mm and from this thread, just as rare?

I have checked gun stores up to 100 miles away in my state.(WI)

I wish I could find that store in Illinois I guess I would drive down and have it transferred. I even tried Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee. I called the 1-800 number for Cabelas and was told they don't have any nation wide.

Have you tried Moe's Hardware in Black River Falls?

I stopped by there a couple days ago and they said they had a list of four people on it, and they get four Shields in every week. I didn't put my name down, but it is tempting. Moe's was swamped at the time with pheasant season opening and all... If you've never been to Moe's, it's a treat. Little hardware store in a little town but they have about 4,000 guns for sale.

I can confim that. They sell alot of guns so I assume the distributers treat them well. It's also a nice place to go into because they have some strange rifles in stock. A mini-14 in 6.8? Never heard of it until I stopped in. That is also the place where I finally found my PPQ. And I should clarify, nice in terms of their selection. But it's small and a little crowded as they have guns laying around all over the place. Badge- I don't know where you're located but it's worth a look if you're in the area.

Sorry if I quoted a website that indicated microstamping was required in CA. This following site quoted the particular gun laws for all states and I cut and pasted the exact wording I posted earlier.

Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence » Design Safety Standards for Handguns Policy Summary

I checked the CA Bureau of Firearms website, as linked in an earlier post, which has no mention of microstamping. The mag safety and loaded chamber indicator are required from 2005 laws. The microstamping was proposed legislation that did not pass. I can find both Shields on the CA approved handguns, so it appears that S&W has submitted the Shields with magazine safeties and LCI to CA and got approval. Unknown if CA will accept the view hole as a loaded chamber indicator or if an actual LCI has to be added. Now all you need is for S&W to start manufacturing them for you.
