A friend bought a used Shield, has not shot it yet. I know the RSA assembly had problems at one point. Questions:
1) What date range was the problem?
2) What were the symptoms (how can we look to see if the problem exists)?
I hear they have fixed it - was part of the RSA changed or the entire RSA?

Thanks - He got a good deal, I am sure a new RSA would not cost enough to make him regret the deal, if they are available and fix the problem.

It costs nothing to fix. If the RSA breaks, S&W will send you a new one at no charge. The downside is you not knowing when or if it's going to happen.

why worrying for defective parts before shooting the gun ?

We'll shoot the gun soon, he just got it today.

But if there is a physical sign of the problem we will look for it. Forewarned is forearmed.

If a new part can be ordered ahead of time and the cost is reasonable it saves having the gun down for weeks while a replacement arrives.

And curiosity - what is the failure mode? Does the gun jam once in a while or does the assembly fall apart and make the gun inoperable?

Thanks

Or....

....call the factory. They will send you a shipping label. It takes a couple days for it to get there, they fix defects pretty quick, a few days and a couple more days to get back to you. Done deal.
Mine came back in about a week and a half.

What is the RSA assembly

I'm ignorant on this assembly and the acronym. What is the RSA assembly and what were the issues with the shields?

TXDave

suggestion, read your manual that came w/ your 45. or check S&W http:. it will show you the part # and location.

Make sure the recoil spring assembly is properly seated as shown in the operators manual and there shouldn't be any problems. However if it would make your friend rest easier then contact SW for a replacement.
I've had my Shield for about 3 years and have put over 2000 rounds down range with no issues. Tell him to shoot the sh*t out of it and enjoy it. It's a great pistol.

If the RSA is bent he'll need a new one.

There are two problems that can occur. Both may be assessed by field stripping the Shield.

Problem #1 is a bent spring retainer disk on the back end of the recoil spring assembly. If it is bent, the Shield will function, but you may get more failures to eject than you normally would.

Problem #2 is where the front spring retainer disk completely detaches from the RSA. This happens when you remove the RSA for cleaning. When that happens, the RSA completely flies apart. It is not repairable.

If your friend's RSA is intact and unbent when it's removed, there is no problem.

Funny that you say call S&W and they will send you a new rsa. I called them 5 weeks ago and the rsa is apparently still on back order because my new rsa still hasn't shown up. I bought a brand new pc shield and rsa was defective from the factory. But this problem is hit or miss. So shoot the gun before worrying about problems that don't exist yet.
